What makes a car rare?
In 2003, Mercury brought back the Marauder nameplate after a 33 year absence, only to cancel it again after 2004. For 2003, 7,839 Marauders were produced, and they were only offered in three colors; 328 were Dark Pearl Blue, 417 were Silver Birch, and 7,094 were Black. In 2004, only 3,213 were produced, again in only three colors; 981 were Dark Toreador Red, 987 were Silver Birch, and the remaining 1,245 were Black.
A low production number is what makes a car rare. A grand total of only 11,052 Marauders were produced for 2003 and 2004. Causes of the low sales numbers have been the subject of debate among Marauder enthusiast. Some site the price tag of over 35 thousand dollars as being what scared people away, while others blame it on lack of advertising. Some of us blame both equally.
“Mustang power wrapped in Lincoln luxury” is how the Marauder was described when it debuted. The unique look and solid body colors earned the Marauder more nicknames than colors it was available in. “Satan’s Taxi”, “Mafia Starter Car”, “Rusty Trombone”, “Al Capone’s Car If He Were Alive Today”, “The Silver Bullet”, “Blurauder”, and “Angry Dragon” are all nicknames that get thrown around.
The rarest of the rare Marauders is without a doubt a 2003 Dark Pearl Blue without the factory optional 6 CD Changer in the trunk. Only 328 rolled down the assembly line, and only 71 of those were ordered without the CD Changer.
The Dark Pearl Blue paint was only used on 328 Marauders because it proved to be incredibly expensive over the other 3 colors. But, it also proved to make them a few tenths of second faster at the drag strip. Vroooooom!
