Why do threads always get tboned just because the topic was discussed before? Not all of us have been on the site forever. We are entitled to ask questions too without having to "look it up".
I'm confused!
what do you mean by T-boned threads?
And who did it???

What I mean is that you are told it was discussed before so you should look it up. I've seen it said numerous times. For instance, in my OEM Shocks thread, someone listed a bunch of threads for me to look at. OK fine. I looked at some of them. Rather tedious. I think it would be nice just to have my thread answered by other members without it basically being shut down by telling me to look up a bunch of old threads.
I'm sure some threads get old for all of you senior members, but that's life.

Exactly.
The search function isn't the greatest.
I have searched for things and couldn't find what I was always looking for.
I don't see anything wrong with asking questions. That's what this site is supposed to be here for.
I will never understand why some members here rag on other members for asking a simple question. Dosent make a person feel very welcome.
I say instead of posting "use the search function" don't post in the thread at all.

Thank you.
Some members have been on this site for 4,5,6 years and have seen it all here.
Others have just joined this site a week or a month or 2 ago so all of this is "NEW" to them.
Sucks being a new guy asking basic questions about a car "NEW" to them and having their thread littered with "use the search function" and he or she dosent even get the answers they were looking for.
Being a contributing member and only being on the site for barely 3 months I would be scratching my head wondering WTF am I paying for!!! :argh:
T-bone all I can say is don't take it personally. You aren't the only "NEW" member here that go's through this. :shake:
Any questions you have feel free to ask me and hopefully I can answer your questions.

It would be nice if we could have a forum called "Frequent Topics" and just sticky a bunch of stuff like wacky wipers, tunes, first mods, tire sizes, interchangeability, etc, but then people probably wouldn't see it.
BTW, I've noticed "on that other site" the search function is always there, even if you are not logged in. Here, it only appears once you log in. Wonder why?

It's also just plain more fun to start a thread, have questions answered, make observations, share info and have conversations about stuff, etc. rather than looking up old threads.
I don't open every thread listed. If its not something I'm interested in, I move on.
That's how you make friends.

lol, yeah I agree with you about the search function not exactly being 100% helpful. I typed in amber lamps a couple minutes ago. 39, yes 39 pages are listed.

Hey Tbone why not get informmed by using the search and afterwards still ask the questions? Never get to the point where you stop asking questions bro!

I agree that sometimes the search function isn't all that great and I have been criticized by people telling me to use the search function... They only say it, because they don't have the answer for you and want to look smart...

The thing where they tell you to use search could be interesting if you threw it back at them and turned it into 40 questions for them to answer.
Why do threads always get tboned just because the topic was discussed before? Not all of us have been on the site forever. We are entitled to ask questions too without having to "look it up".
We do have a FAQ sticky suggestion in front of each forum.
Another help for the search function is to put in the TITLE of your post a key word that is searchable. For example "tires", not "my car wobbles", that way the search engine can go straight to all titles with the word "tires".
I mentioned this before and Mary tries to change titles that are ambigious, but she can't sit at the keyboard 24/7.
So let's help each other out with clear and consise titles to our posts.

Thanks, Pat...I'm here only 23/7. ;) I do regularly update titles, especially spelling. I know some are titled just to get a lot of looks, but that doesn't help one's quest for an answer. We also expanded the Shop Talk forum by adding subforums. You can search within a specific forum too. We're doing the best we can within the confines of vBulletin and our available time.

I think if someone takes the time to write "you need to do a search" or whatever instead of just answering a short question from maybe a new member it seems sorta crappy.

Some questions that come up require a long explanation like when we would get 5 new threads a month asking what the difference between a 300A and 300B. A sticky solved that issue and if the question came up again the answer of using the search would be appropriate.
I agree the search isn't the greatest especially since it gives you 40 threads to read through most of which brings a thread up because someone casually mentioned the part you were looking for. It also doesn't help that the archive goes back 8 years.

I generally have NO problem with the search feature. :P Maybe that comes from 6 years of stick time and a fairly decent memory. :D
Personally, I think that the "use the search feature" line tends to come up more frequently on the topics that have been beat to death since 2002. Regardless, questions here are always answered ... usually even with a link to the appropriate thread.
Of course, using the search function requires a little initiative and thought. Some folks would rather be lazy and let others do the legwork. :flamer:

My wife uses the search function when she pulls down my pan......................opps. :D
Im all about interactng with people. I say screw the search function. I typed in 4.10's and 4.10 gears and more crap about other threads came up than what I was looking for. F the F-ing search function. But I do try it still.
Its a forum where you "interact".

Damn forumers, ruining everything!
Yeah, this about my 100th ***** about the search function.
The search function does suck big time. It searches for every word you type in,not combinations, so don't even bother searching for anything with oil, water, gas, wiper, etc.
What is so hard about fixing it so it could be useful?
And yes, there are a 100 threads that should be stickied, but it would require work.
And yes, titles to threads suck, people should be more specific. If a title does not mention the specific subject, the thread should just be deleted.(well, a little leeway in the Lounge)
And yes, despite all that, it get's very old when someone new does not even make an effort to do a search. If someone else has the time to search and add several links to a thread, why can't the lazy-ass question asker search? (not directed at tbone!!! just a general statement)
OK, got my bitchfest out of the way for awhile. :)

That was me, and the intent was an effort to be helpful. I suppose I could have opened each one of the theads, tried to guess at what would or would not have been relevant to you, copied and pasted those comments into my response, didn't realize I was "shutting you down," that's how I gained a good portion of my info off this site, silly me figuring that would work for a noob. Guess that's life....

Dude, I wasn't really irritated at you so much, and I appreciated your effort to help me. I had just read another thread where someone was told to use the search function, and I wanted to make a point. I've seen it over and over again.
I guess an easier and appreciated answer would be:
"Gas shocks. Last anywhere from 60K to 200K. Not sure why your car has a little bump in the rear suspension between shifts at 30mph. Probably the shift program."
I wasn't trying to start a **** storm, just making a point. I will definitely think twice before ever starting a new thread here.

Yup, and along the way we've all had our chains yanked a time or two. ;)
FWIW, You brought up some valid points in your thread, but look at it from the "seniors" point of view, some of these questions have been asked over, and over, and over again, so it gets a little wearisome, especially when the site has such a wealth of archived knowledge (even if it isn't always the most user friendly).
I really shouldn't complain, though; you've not asked the difference between a 300A and a 300B (have you?). :D

Why do threads always get tboned just because the topic was discussed before? Not all of us have been on the site forever. We are entitled to ask questions too without having to "look it up".
Easy answers:
a) A lot of people here aren't as bright as they make themselves out to be. This is a defense mechanism.
b) Some people do get annoyed at reading the same subject(s) over and over.
c) Some people just derive some sort of weird sexual satisfaction by making you feel inferior.
Myself, if I read something where someone is asking a question I will do one of three things. If I know the answer, or have been pleased by a particular product, I'll post up. This is how it used to work here, but that was a long time ago. If I don't know the answer, I'll try to keep my big mouth shut. Finally, if it's about a product or service which I have an ill opinion of, I will send the thread starter a pm regarding my opinion. I try not to belittle any vendors here, or others opinions if I don't agree (regarding the car specific stuff). I don't reaqd all the threads, but if I have a bit of knowledge, I'll try to share.

I will definitely think twice before ever starting a new thread here.
You give up too easy...lol.
With my project, since no one is doing what I'm doing, whenever I would post up questions, I would get a thousand responses saying "why bother?" and "why don't you just build up your 2v to be as fast as a 4V?" This was not here but on other Panther sites. So I can see what you're saying about people being helpful. The solution: research it somewhere else.
There are so many modular ford websites that the information is out there if you want it bad enough. I joined just about every one of them, since during my swap at one time or another, I needed to know about: markviii, continental, CV/GM, SVT, MM, etc.
Heck, one of my first posts here was asking if anyone here had done a hydroboost swap to a MM. I got a lot of "why bother?" responses here also, but I think it was because people at first thought I might be a troll. Once they knew I was serious I got some info/opinions from people when I explained that was doing it to try and make room for a 5.4 DOHC.
Moral of the story:
if you can't find the info here, you can find it if you are willing to search other avenues.
Good luck.
