View Full Version : Speed limits on cruise convoys
Friends;
Last year in our convoy to downtown Louisville, while on the expressway, I was reaching speeds of 85 MPH just to keep up. Then slamming on the brakes to keep from rear ending the cars in front.
May I fervently implore the leaders of the various cruises to keep below the speed limit, reducing the accordion effect of the "train".
Patricia and I so look forward to the country side cruises but we want to see the sights, not hang on to the crash bar with white knuckles.
Thanks for listening,
Pat and Patricia

I reached 110:eek: under the tunnel after a cop flew by, slowed down and waved me to gun it.

Pat,
Unsure how and why you guys were hitting those speeds last year?
As the "Lead Marauder" following the LEO, we were cruising around 50 MPH. on I-64 to and from downtown Louisville.
John (LMPD) told me that large of a procession would have to be treated as such for our safety and keeping us all together.
Going to Churchill Downs, we may have driven a bit faster but not all that much due to the rain encountered on our way there.
My guess would be opportunities for hard acceleration then having to throw out the anchor once catching up to the convoy. :D
Traveling this year to Maker's Mark and Heaven Hill Distilleries will mostly consist of 2-lane roads in the country that have a lot of hills, curves, slow moving trucks and farm equipment. Not to mention people pulling out of their driveways, animals in the road(s), bla, bla, bla,..
I am not planning on breaking any land-speed records while heading to our destinations.
;)
Mike.

I upgraded to Wilwoods just for the high speed sprints and sudden stops during the convoys. I guess I'll put my stock brakes back on......

Interesting,...
You have upgraded brakes and the car isn't running under it's own power yet?
Get it running, then worry about stopping.

Pat, it ain't the speed, it's the following distance. Keep the cars far enough apart, and you won't have that problem.
When we travel in convoys to ball games, I require my bus drivers to stay a quarter mile apart. If we have a bus in an accident, I don't want it to be FOUR buses (or more)!

I think a ton of traffic jams could clear out MUCH faster if people didn't punch it when there was a small opening only to slam the brakes immediately. I've tested it myself and things tend to smooth out a little around me when I by myself create a distance gap even.

I thought it was funny, but Jr. had never been to a car gathering where burnouts are a normal occurance. Her response was "Eeeeeeewwwwwwww!!! Is his car burning?! Eeeeeeewwwwww!!!" as she waved her hand in front of her face and tried to find the window button in all the fog, lol. Good times!

Thanks Casey! I try!! But seriously, those of you that say keep a safe space have not tried to keep thirty plus cars together on a highway AND downtown setting even with police escort. I witnessed some seriously DUMB people that were soooo clueless even with all the flashing lights and sirens!!! They will try anything to break up the convoy. I even saw on person pull right out into the middle of the SAME intersection that a cop had stopped in to give us right away through. This ended in her now stuck in the center lane with a row of police escorted Marauders going around her on BOTH sides of her. The officer looked HIGHLY PO'd at them. There is safe and then there too safe. Most of us have had our cars for quite sometime now and we know how to control them (ask Silversurfer LOL) Lets not overthink this, bring your two-ways with and keep up to date on what's going on a mile ahead and have some fun!

Pat's point is a good one!
We have been very lucky that we haven't had any incidents. I think if the convey traveled slower it would be safer. There is still room for those who want to sprint up front if they want? But remember not everyone knows or has a GPS to keep them in line for the wag of the tail moves? Maybe breaking up into sub groups so those who get split up from the group have a another leader they can follow to the destination? We can eliminate the panic of being LEFT BEHIND or SEPARATED from the CONVEY?

EVERYONE in the convoy should know exactly where they're going. If you focus on following the vehicle in front of you, that's ALL you're doing, not focusing on driving safely. I've seen loaded school buses following each other down the highway with less than 1 vehicle length between them. NO WAY they could've stopped safely in an emergency.
I've been in the district I'm in now for two football seasons, and I'm just about to get them broken of the habit of following each other too closely. I've threatened to have them leave the parking lot several minutes apart to help keep them separated, or remove them from trip driving all together.
As a kind of funny story (meaning it didn't have a tragic ending) the district I was at before this one had an incident (before I got there) where a group of 4 buses coming home from Dallas, loaded with band students, had to go to the hospital. The back 3 busloads of kids got sick from smelling the exhaust fumes from the buses in front of them. Over 130 kids were treated in a hospital. THAT'S following too close!

All kidding aside,..
It can be a real PITA keeping this many cars together, especially when traffic becomes heavy.
I cannot think of a better group to travel with and is always a lot of fun.
Remember to be safe and pay close attention as there will be places along the way that can and will be a little 'dicey' in getting thru.
;)

True, true. I think we all get what Pat means, and I'm pretty sure none of us wants to be the cause of a 38 Marauder pile up. Comms were great last year, someone was always saying when to slow down, when to exit, when to switch lanes, etc. etc. The Police were awesome, I had no problem with the donation, they earned it IMHO.

True Dat Man...
I spoke with John (LMPD) again tonight and the request for the escort will be placed on the Chief's desk next week for the necessary approval(s).
Same deal... 4 Police cars to get us around town on Saturday.
John and the other participating Officers are looking forward once again to this detail for the 3rd year running.

The problems I have encountered on long distance convoys even Funeral prosessions is other drivers breaking the line and won't move and traveling slower than the convoy. It causes the convoy to try catching up (slingshot) to the convoy vehicle prior to the idiot vehicle that broke the line. It can be chaotic without the lead vehicles even knowing what is happening behind them.

OK guy's I just have to say that Dawn & I are very jealous about all the braking antics & cruise stuff. According to Dennis Watts AKA Fruit Punch we are so far North we are north of the North pole. We feel very alone here in Canada & wish someone would adopt us south of the 49th. LOL Ps. I will fire up my Marauder next week.... sleeping since winter Hibernation on Oct 1/09 How would you like to suffer that long without your Marauder under foot? All the Best, Kenny.
