I heard that the factory oil and volt gauges don't really work. If so, how do I make them work?

You replace them with the real Autometer ones. The only reason you replace the volt guage is to match it up with the oil pressure guage.
Just my .02 and then some.

The oil pressure gauge is a glorified idiot light. If you replace it with a real one, the face of the gauge won't match the voltmeter.
I've had to replace the sending unit on my Autometer real oil pressure gauge numerous times, so I'm probably going to swap to the mechanical gauge soon.

Does anyone know which Autometer gauges have close to the same backlighting as our originals?

I just replaced my gauges yesterday. Its nice to see a real oil pressure gauge. I also think when the lights are on that the new gauges look better than the stock gauges too.
