View Full Version : gear whine?

I just had my frpp 4.10's installed at the local ford dealership and I think I am hearing some gear whine. It is most notable when I let my foot off of the gas when I am going down the highway. It is kind of a high pitched hum/whine but it isn't very loud. Most people probably wouldn't notice it but I am a car guy so I pay attention to these things. Is this some what normal for gears with 200 miles on them?

No, not normal.

no sounds like the lash needs to be checked and carrier bearings might need to be shimmed.

You should hear no noise if the gears were setup properly.
I would take it back right away there should be no whine at all. If there is no defect with the gearset then the install was done improperly.

Backlash is set wrong.
Lots of folks don't get it right.

I wonder if they used the special Ford pinon depth tool? They should have also used marking compound and checked for correct pattern wear. Not good that the Ford Dealer did it wrong.

I have a rotunda tool set and I went through several gearsets on my MM to see how quiet I could get it. I wanted like, quiet as a crypt quiet. I know the difference between face hobbed and face milled gear sets and the difference it makes reading the pattern on them. I still have very slight decel whine with the current ford gear set, installed according to the depth recommended by the rotunda tool and verified trial and error to make sure the depth was right. My car always had a slight decel gear whine from the factory though and I am the only one who it bothers.
I would never have a dealer install gears though unless you have personal knowledge that they know what they are doing, from other people's recommendations

^oh yeah that too. DO NOT put any miles on those gears. You can put them past the point of being able to be reset to be quiet if you run them too much. Oh by the way, did your gears have a -A or a -M prefix? I have been told that the newer -M gears are problematic in the noise department and they were made overseas (Italy?) by Motive, for FRPP, unlike the -A in-house made Ford gears.

That makes me really not want to do the gears.. Every mustang I ever had the gears done it would make noise.. The stock gears don't make a sound.. I would know, I come down a long hill every morning so i would hear it for sure.
Do you loan out thet rotunda tool?

^I have not loaned out the tool, no. If you were local I'd come give you a hand and let you use it but I wasn't planning on shipping it around.

You can not be blamed for not wanting the tool to go out!

Unfortunately, most shops don't do it this way.
The benefit of having a shop whose roots were in Mustangs is we have teh tools to do Ford gears right the first time.

Take it to your local performance shop and make sure they have the proper measurement tool.
The ford dealership is a joke, its just like any other shop but with giant blue ovals decorated everywhere. Most of the time they will know what they're doing, but there are also alot of bonehead rookie mechanics there, as with any shop.
The most important thing is that they warranty their work and that they are a reputable shop.

There aren't any performance shops around here that I would trust. I took the car back today after putting about 220 miles on the gears. The part number for the gears is FMS-M-4209-G410A so, I guess these are the italian made gears. Maybe the guy did put them in right but I guess the gears aren't made well. One reason I took the car there was because of the workmanship warranty.

I'm going to say this from my perspective.....As far as your noise, you definitely want to take it back a.s.a.p...There should be no noise maybe very and I mean very minimal if any.. And I've worked at a Lincoln Mercury dealer for 5 years as a line tech, I was the rearend guy...lol :o I've done towncars, a few lincoln LS's, Navigators, a lot of mustangs and 2 marauders.. Most were done do to a noise, others just for a upgrade. One of the Marauders, were just being upgraded to a set of 4.10's..I only do things the right way the first time and treat the cars as if they were mine, I also use all the ford tools to do the job..If it makes noise I won't let the car go..Luckily for me to say, I haven't had one make noise after the install. Partially because I guess i'm anal, and sure as hell dont wanna do it twice (and a lil luck i'm sure)..Not everyone is like me, also I'm currently now at a true blue oval dealership (ford) and have been for a year and a half now...We do tons of mustang rears, blower upgrades, modd out GT500's, performance upgrades, explorer rears blah blah blah..But we do them right the fisrt time there as well. If theres a problem once again the car won't leave till it fixed...I will agree about the shop being bigger with a big blue sign though...lol.. And we do have some bonehead rookie mechanics but they just do oil changes...But me and the guys I've worked with, we stand behind our work (especially if we are working on a rear, if you get what i'm saying...:D). So long story short take that bad boy back...

A Ford tech told me the Ford gears are the highest grade, then the Ford Motorsport (FRPP) gears, then the aftermarket gears. Apparently there are two different versions of the FRPP gears now. He said he never has whine with the Ford gears, but occasionally the FRPP gears have a whine he can't get rid of no matter what tools he uses for setup.

I took it back yesterday and picked it up today. The SA said that the backlash was correct and that they were installed correctly. He said that they were just gonna make some noise. I think he is full of it because I have been through a differential class at the local comm. coll. and have always been tolled that you should never here noise. After I left the dealership it was still making that faint noise. However, I did notice that there were about 60 or 70 more miles on the car. I think they went for a joy ride and never even took the differential cover off. You only had to drive the car 10 miles at most to diagnose the problem. If you are ever in Greenville, NC DO NOT go to Hastings Ford to get any work done. I sure as hell will never go again.

That's what I mean about the dealership being just like any other shop but with big blue oval banners. You pay the extra money to have the highest quality service performed with extreme precision, and you get a guy that tells you "they're supposed to sound like that". F that, they need to go over it with a fine tooth comb for what you probably payed to have it done!
By the way, how much did you pay to have it done?
I'm getting mine done at my local speed shop for 300$. Seemed like a damn good price.

There are different grades of gears, and the guy above is correct, they do get sorted even if they are made in usa ford vs. made in usa ford. I'm sure there is a reason the OEM gears are $400 for a kit and the FRPP are half that. It's not just the box that makes the difference. The Dearborn Ford gear factory told me they sort gears by tolerance, even for one oem application vs another, depending on what engineering calls for. They said the Mustangs are known to be sensitive chassis to gear noise and they get the gears that checked out to the least error in manufacturing.
But that is for the US made ford gears.
And if you have the -M motive made (overseas) FRPP gears which it looks like you do, I have read a lot of complaints about them on Mustang sites on the net. They all said, get the -A american made gears not the -M ones, they are known to be noisier and hard to set up quiet. Hopefully the noise you hear is tolerable because they are not going to break in any quieter, and it doesn't sound like the dealer is going to help you out any. Sucks

The noise isn't that bad. You can only hear it on decel. If the radio is on it isn't very noticeable. If I had the stainless works exhaust system, you may not be able to hear it at all.

Faint noise on decel from what I have experienced and what I have talked to others who have had 8.8s setup, is pretty common. Mine does it slightly on decel, I used -A US made Ford new gears, and I went through several gear sets and I did use the Rotunda tool to install it, to see if any were any better than others. What I find is that a lot of people that think their stuff is dead silent, just aren't as picky (or don't have perfect hearing!) or have loud exhausts and wouldn't be able to tell anyway.
Could be worse! Drive it and enjoy the 4.10s

Thanks for the input. It's killing me to not be able to smoke the tires. Gotta wait for them to brake in.

Put it this way. I talked on the phone to some guys who set up the Ford gear sets at the factory. One of them set up a set of FRPP 4.10s for a member on here a while ago. The ford factory guy on the phone that set them up was proud that they were dead silent according to him. I talked to the member who had them set up, and he said they whined slightly on coast! And they were set up by a guy whose job it is to do the gear manufacturing and setup at the plant.

Who and where is this guy? I still dream of a trac loc and of axles. I should of had them done at one time but I just couldn't wait.

Same here, not switching to 31 spline but I'm swapping to a HD 8 clutch carbon fiber trac-lok, FRPP 410's, a clear differential cover, and Royal Purple

What Maryland dealership do you work at?
Local CAM members would most likely take their rides to you for a quality/quiet gear install.
BTW: Which is worse: Gear whine on decel....or....the wife whining on accel?
