Hey guys, quick question:

what do you think would be a reasonable price to have the four brake rotors turned? I'm uneasy about what this shop is gonna charge me and I wanna get some feedback from those with experience. I'd rather not give the number until I can get some feedback though.

If you take them off yourself and take them in, then it ranges from $12 - $30 each here. If you have a Carquest, they are the cheepest hands down around here, and do a quality job.

Yeh, that's what I thought. I'm gonna have to have a word with this shop, apparently for checking my 4 brakes and the parking brakes, and just turning the rotors and not replacing any pads or shoes, they want a hair under $300.

I'll do them for $250 AND pay the shipping...

It's already done, which is going to make things infinitely more difficult... :/

I would not pay more then $15 per rotor. Tell them that the flaps in your neighborhood only charges that and you assumed they would charge the same price/ going rate.

Need to get a quote up front on these types of deals!

+1 on $15/rotor. That's what my local NAPA charges.

It's already done, which is going to make things infinitely more difficult... :/ Why was work performed on your car (or parts of your car) without first agreeing on or at least discussing a price?

RIP ZACK -6.25.09 Need to update that sig, dude!

My dealer charges $160 per axle for a brake job or cutting rotors.

K, just got back, billing was as follows:

$50 to turn all 4 rotors,

$240 for-
check brakes and advise customer,
clean and adjust e-brake
roadtest for proper operation

and $7 for chemical brake cleaner.

I was told about two weeks ago that it would be $230 for the front axle work plus replacing the pads, I don't know how the numbers work to come to 300 without replacing any parts now aside from taking the two extra rotors off and putting them back on, but maybe I'm just an idiot. Any ways about it, the little onesy-twosy surprise charges pretty much mean I won't be going back.

I swear though, this car will take all my money from me before it's all said and done...

No joke. They actually told me there was nothing wrong with the parking brakes, but they charged me to clean and adjust them too. I think I'll be actively telling my friends and others that are local to avoid going to that shop the more i think about it, at least for brake jobs.

Checking brakes is basically a visual inspection + measuring the thickness of the rotor. Doesn't cost much, even if they dealer/service center has to remove the tires. Road testing doesn't cost a dime. So basically, they charged $150-$200 to clean and adjust the E-brake.

That's all I can figure. They also tried to argue that me talking with their tech two weeks ago when I scheduled the appointment for today constituted a major consultation charge.

Obviously you've been taken big time to the auto cleaners. I would check to insure they even turned your rotors. My money is they didn't!

This is a good $300.00 lesson for you. Learn to do small work like this on your own because shops DO NOT care about charging there a$$ off to do it for you!

I really need to adjust my rates...

Me too! With those rates I could retire in before I'm 50. $230 and they didn't even change the pads??

MrBluGruv

the $230 would've been new pads for the front and turning the front rotors.

It was $300 to turn all 4 rotors essentially. I think it was nailed earlier in the thread, they basically charged me $240 to "clean and adjust" the parking brake. The part that bothers me more than anything is the fact that they told me there was no problem with the parking brake. I'm wondering if I ought to consider taking this further, but I have no idea what I'd do or who I'd take it to.

You could always talk to the Manager; tell him you need an adjustment not just to your brakes; BUT to your Bill!! (Seriously, tell him to credit you -- IF they want your continued/future Biz they'll play... PLUS be sure and tell them you're ready to file a complaint w/ the Better Business bureau; SUPER EASY -- just go to BBB.com in your area; find the business; get a name as the contact at this dealer or shop and state you were overcharged for this work and give the "going rates" comparatively at other shops... no legit business will want to deal with this hassle..esp. IF they're members of the BBB...worth a shot and don't cost you a thing...you just fill out the form online and BBB will interecede on your behalf...) Good luck and keep us posted!

I'll definately try to speak with the manager first, I don't like the idea of causing them hassle but I also can't afford to lose money over nothing. Sad part is I've been taking my business there for about 4 years now. In that time this is the second time they messed up on something but it's the first time they've refused to do anything about it.

Is this a Ford dealer?

Exacally, And why would you turn the rotors and not change the pads?:shake: In fairness, I've done that. My '02 Marquis had a ton of pad left and it was in good shape, but the rotors had a slight warp to them.

I turned them and got 20k out of them, and there was plenty of brake left when I traded the car in.

It isn't a Ford dealer, it's a mom-n-pop type place. Owner is really friendly and helpful most of the time, guess they just thought they would try to screw me this time?

And the rotors and not pads issue is because they said the pads AND shoes had about 80% to 85% life left in them. It blows my mind really, cause the car has about 96K miles on it, at least 40K of those I put on, and I've personally never touched the brakes until now, and I sincerely doubt the previous owner(s) or dealership I bought it from did either.

Sounds like a little bit of sandpaper probally would have cleaned up your rotors just fine seeing as your pads were still ok,instead of paying them thiefs next time spend 300.00 on a nice tool set and learn how to do the easy stuff yourself you will save alot of money and grief in the end,,sorry about your luck
