Do you know of a good drive shaft shop in the Durham area? I have to go to the VA on 23rd and I would like to talk to some one about balancing my driveshaft.

Don't waste your time & money. Buy a dynotech driveshaft.

Is there a vibration now at high speed that you can feel in the seat? If not, no need to balance or get a new shaft. I have 4.10's and drive at or above the speed limit for long periods of time (8 - 10MPH over the limit) with occasional bursts to 100+ and have not had a problem for the 50,000+ miles I have the 4.10's installed. Original drive shaft - not balanced - just like it came from the factory.

If you still feel the need to get your shaft balanced.......

Take your chances...

I prefer to do it once and do it right so I don't have to worry about it any more.

I have been told that balancing your drive shaft is just as good as buying an aftermarket drive shaft. In case your wondering, this came from some one who wasn't trying to make money off of me.

Do whatever makes you feel good then.

You wouldn't be the first who posted again a couple of months after not replacing the shaft, wondering why your transmission is leaking or commenting that the tailhousing is busted and the car had to be towed.

The problems relating to high speed vibration in driveshafts doesn't relate so much to balance as it does to deflection.

True!

Marauders have long driveshafts that flex and set-up a harmonic vibration at higher speeds (4.10 gears especially).
The OEM driveshaft may be rebalanced to help reduce vibration, but that does not cure the deflection problem.
No pun intended...but a stiffer driveshaft is the answer.
I went overboard and installed a very light, very stiff carbon fiber driveshaft....back when I had lots of disposable income!

BTW, I was one of those who didn't believe it, about 7 years ago. I was lucky, I drove a couple of thousand miles after the 4.10 swap then had the car on a lift to get the exhaust system upgraded. That's when I discovered the leak.

After hearing of many others with similar stories, many of them much worse than mine, I will always recommend a driveshaft upgrade with 4.10's.

i can relate to that, if you use the search button you can find how my tailshaft housing looked like when i took it out. IN PIECES.
get a good aftermarket driveshaft like Brian said.

My stock driveshaft has seen 160mph and held up fine, no leaks and it's been many many miles since that happened. But you know what? I STILL got an upgraded driveshaft. I pretty firmly believe the insurance is gonna be much cheaper than the gamble if you lose. So as others have said, do what you feel is best, but even I, a pretty firm believer that there is something else going on than just a matter of weak driveshaft, can't ignore the many many stories of driveshaft and tailshaft failure.

just buy a new shaft. it's a good upgrade and save yourself the future headache.
