**** if that's what passes for bad around here, I'm pretty sure I'd be murdered for mine. :( But living with a gravel driveway in the south texas countryside (and a myriad of other issues that would only make sense if you lived around here) makes it exceedingly difficult to maintain a clean bay. I once tried to clean mine and got it to the point of what that looks like in the picture, only to have it back to looking like a dirt field in a week.

What's some good safe ways to clean out these engines, cosmetically speaking? I'm honestly a little afraid that I will ruin something if I'm not careful and I can't afford too many more problems with the vehicle right now.

Buy your favorite engine degreaser (I use the citrus scented type), follow the instructions on the can, use low pressure water to rinse off, don't spray water directly on any electrical connectors, alternator, etc. Air dry or use compressed air to dry. I follow that up with CD2 Engine detailer. Whenever I wash the Marauder I spray under the hood to get rid of any dust/dirt.

Make sure the engine is completely cold.

1. I usually cover the alternator with a rag to prevent excess water entry.

2. Light hose down the engine bay with water (I use the "cone" setting on the sprayer nozzle, regular household line pressure).

3. Spray entire engine bay with a solution of 1 part Simple Green to 2 parts water. Allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. For heavy deposits of dirt or grease, use a small brush to loosen the build up, re-spray.

4. Rise down the engine bay with water, I use the same setting as #2 above.

5. If this is your first time cleaning the engine, you may need to repeat steps 3 & 4.

6. Tip of the hat to blackened300a for this next step: Spray the entire engine bay ( excpet for belts) with Stoner More Shine. It displaces water and leaves a nice, soft sheen to everything.

I guessing that's a bit too much gear for the eaton. Bawzir has factory 3.55's should be great with those ya?

so what is this about:???

Zack, He is doing the PIIHB mod right? I hope he did, and to stay safe at full throttle, did he get the proper gasket? Too much friction is BAD.

I should be happy with 3.55, No need to swap it to 4.10.

I'm still running 3:55's in mine!

Personally I don't see the point in running the 4:10's with a eaton. But that's just my opinion.

Whenever you do a manual 1-2, it will engage the OD band in 2.

BAD!

I've never understood this, and I've never EVER had transmission trouble after 40k miles of this behavior on a maybe-barely-regular basis. I've understood there to be problems when mashing the gas down and hand-shifting from Drive to Second gear, made that mistake once or twice and it was something akin to dumping the clutch in a standard car while moving. But never manually down or upshifting properly, never had a problem.

The OD band is not capable of withstanding numerous WOT shifts.
Whenever the gear selector is in 2, the OD band is engaged.

There is no way to override it and its there to help in starts from zero in snow/icy conditions.

Are you just talking about shifts or its capabilities for handling the full load of the engine? I'm N/A with an intake, mild manifold-back exhaust modifications and a (what I feel, personally, to be) fantastic tune, I imagine I'm at 340-350 TOPS at the crank. As I mentioned, I ALWAYS turn off O/D before entering 2nd, and when I do manually shift, I do not apply throttle until I am positive the vehicle is in 2nd gear, much like a standard. Would you say that simply having 2nd gear engaged manually via the gear selector puts the transmission into a state in which it can't handle the power of the motor at full-throttle?

When the gear selector is in 2, there is absolutely NO WAY to have the OD band un-applied.

Its an automatic for a reason....so you dont have to shift it. Its not a Turbo 400 and you cant treat it that way.
Besides, with the OD band applied during manually shifting, you may be going slower because of the increased drag in the transmission.

Fair enough. The main reason I ever do downshift manually is because I don't like the lag time for the car to drop from O/D to 3rd then to 2nd, never fails that I'll need 2nd only if I'm in 3rd, but at least it isn't as bad was trying to get 2nd to drop to 1st. I really need to get me a standard car. :(

in the trans tune you can set the downshift to 2nd @ wot to a higher MPH.

I don't think I quite understand what you're trying to tell me to do here. Do you mean like allow for the computer to tolerate a forced downshift from WOT to 2nd at a higher MPH? I don't think it's really the speed I'm going that affects it, it's more of it feels like the time it takes to give from 3rd to 2nd, or even from OD to 3rd to 2nd just takes a while between gears.

that's a different deal, the previous comment about getting 3rd when you need 2nd is what I was talking about.

For the comment above about the down shifts taking a long time, that problem can also be fixed in the tune.

Its all in the shift timers in the tune. I turn them all way down so the shifts happen right now. It also is good for the trans because it eliminates any slipping from a long shift.
