Ok so my MM was smoking last year a little when I started it. On warm days smoked more. During the winter hardly at all. Now with the weather getting warmer really is smoking quite a bit when I start it. No loss in power and no noises. I suspect I have a frozen ring or some kind of ring problem. Any suggestions for a shop where I can her or any other ideas? I live in western Howard county so good MM shop out here preferred. Maybe I'll get one of those Lido tunes and the 4 10 gears while they are at it.

Thx, Leo

If it only does it during startup, thats the common startup smoke on early build 300A's. Its most likely a valve issue and not a ring.

Correct, and it's not a big deal. You can probably go 200k with it like it is.

03mmmonroe recently changed his valve seals, maybe he will chime in as to how difficult it was.

+1 its your SEALS. Try some Auto-Rx to clean and recondition them. Then: notice it doesn't smoke at startup.

I hadn't started mine in a few weeks, so I expected the blue on start up, but even after it warmed up, there was still a wisp of blue out of both pipes, since I still have 8,000 miles on my engine warranty, I'm going to have it checked out.

Since the problem is with the original parts on the 300A - has the problem been fixed in the replacement parts they now sell for the car. If I tear it down to the heads and do all that work - would like to know that the problem won't just be back in a couple of years again.

Thx, Leo

My 2004 had a small amount of smoke at start up on a few occations from day one. It had just eight miles on the odometrer when new. You can't tell me it had bad seals. Also has had a slight valve tick since day one noticed more durring cold weather. I found after warm up it goes away. Oil pressure has always been good. I have always changed oil & filters with synthetic every 5000 miles. I think the smoke at start up is related to something other than seals in most cases. But unless one has more than 100,000 miles on a motor & driven hard then I could say different.

I have 213+K miles on mine and it smokes sometimes and sometimes it doesn't??:shake: No rhyme or reason except if I start it cold to move it and start it again later....POOF.....FOG BANK!!

It has never used any oil so I don't worry about it!!:shake:

Wonder when it's gonna quit on me??:o

+2 On the valve stem seals. The 4.6 2 valve and 4 valves tend to have those problems during startup, more the 2 valves though..I've done the seals on both setups..They aren't really bad as long as you have the special tools..

I wouldn't worry about...mine has done it off and on since new!!

If you aren't consuming excessive amounts of oil and your plugs are clean....Keep On Truckin'!!!!:burnout:

This is common on 300B's as well. Mine does it after it's been sitting for more than an hour or over night, after sdtart up it clears up after 5 or so seconds. On some occasions I have heard some valve tick but it goes away too.

I would suspect it's valve seals. there are additives out ther that do recondition seals and they do work to some degree. If it's really bothering you could add some lucas oil stabilizer, I have used the synthetic version. It has stopped the smoke at start up. Babbage mentions Auto-Rx as an option too.

I may try the synthetic Lucas oil stabilizer to see if stops the smoking on startup. It is not that I am worried that there is something really wrong with my MM as the car still runs like a racehorse. Since I use it for work I don't want the folks I work with to think I am driving an old piece of junk.

JimP - how long ago did you add the Lucas oil stabilizer to your MM?

Thx, Leo

It wont - again to clean and recondition the seals try auto-rx.
