Is it possible to have the clutches go bad in the rear differential. It sounds as if the rear end is starting to make a rough noise while excellerating from a stop and turning left or right at the same time. It does not make the noise excellerating from a stop while going straight just when I make a turn to the left or right. And it does not do when the car is already going and the I turn without stopping. It only makes the rough sound when at a stop then I excellerate at any speed and turn left or right. I can also feel it too.
If it is the clutches. What parts and do you recommend and should I replace anything else since the differential would be open.

Any ideas fellas? Thanks.

Joe

Did you check to see if it is low in the rear end on gear oil?

You should get it look at when you get the 4.10 gears, the way 2 save money

Yes the clutches can go bad. I would try having the fluid changed first, get some Royal Purple 75w-140 gear oil, you will need 2.5 quarts.

Sounds like bad spider gears? My camaro would do the same thing.. no bad noises while going straight, but when taking turns or going in reverse (especially at low speeds) I would get a popping/grinding noise.

I just had the oil changed 2 weeks ago. And it is not leaking any oil. And this just started 3 days ago or so.

proabably because you dont have enough friction modifier in it... if any... go to ford, it's like 4 bucks a bottle it's called friction modifier, buy 2 put in your diff in a day or two it shoud go away.

Thats exactly your problem. No friction modifier and the clutches are toast. I went with the Ford kit with the carbon clutches and upgraded "S" spring.
Summit sells it and I believe that Tommy from Sparta can hook you up with one too.

Yes the clutches can go bad, but they usually result in peg-legging burnouts instead of noise...

So I was going to suggest this ^^^^

Until we got THE REST OF THE STORY vvvv

So it is most likely this vvvv

Thanks guys. I will try adding the friction modifier before I have someone rip into it. I asked about the friction modifier when I took my car in for a wheel alignment and to change my rear diff fluid. I was told it was already in the oil they used. I can not remember what brands they offered. I will try it though.

You didn't tell me you changed your gear oil. +9000 it is from no Friction Modifier.

Oops. I did forget to tell you I had it changed recently. :depress: Sorry Bob.

I bought mine from Autozone, they have a couple different brands. If you need help holler.

Where did you take it that they changed it?

I'll bet dollars to donuts they didn't use: AMSOIL, Redline or Royal Purple.
Those are the only 3 that are 100% full synthetic and have the FM already in it...

I'd change the gear oil again - since it now has clutch particulate in it.

I was thinking the same thing too. I might as well just do it myself like I knew I should have instead of trying to save time and my back.:depress:
They did not mention those brands except for RP. He did not like that brand which I thought was crazy.

Sometimes to get it right you have to screw it up all by yourself!

Change the fluid and put the synthetic in. Hopefully will solve your problem.

Another thing you might want to check before you go spending $$ have a look at the emergency brake shoe lineing they have a tendency to rust away and seperate from the shoe causeing a draging rubbing sound when driveing slow or turning

You only need 1 bottle of friction modifier and while you are there buying it at ford, buy the gear oil from them too.

I'm having a similar situation, but not exactly identical I think, I'm not sure:

Whenever I'm turning at pretty much any speed, I hear a sort of humming noise from the rear-end, something akin to like a giant finger rubbing against a giant glass, that squeeky rubbing noise, not a grinding noise though. It happens moving forward and in reverse, and the volume is pretty much directly proportional to the degree that I'm turning. I recently had 4.10 gears swapped into a completely rebuilt rear-end, and I used the HD Cobra clutches for the rebuild. Is this a lack of friction modifier or is this something else?

Can you look at that without removing the axle?

Yes, just remove the rear rotors to view the parking brake assembly.

if the friction modifier doesn't cure your problem then it is clutches for sure.
Ford has TSB's on many F150 and Explorer 8.8 rear ends for chattering/binding clutches while accelerating and turning at the same time
