View Full Version : Thinking about Grand Marquis Rear Shocks

My Blue MM rides like hell out back. Its definitely getting some new shocks b4 the Kentucky trip, and Im toying with the idea of Monroe SensaTracs from a Grand Marquis.

As I get older, I find the harsh ride to be quite annoying, and Im certainly not racing this car through corners like I used to do 10 years ago.

Thoughts on this, or has anyone done it?

Im almost inclined to believe the shock may be bottoming out on good bumps. Couple that with the fact my bumper stops are shortened....

How many miles on the old ones? New "stock" ones would probably be a noticeable improvement, yes no? I've noticed lately potholes seem a little harder when I hit them, even man-hole covers that are not quite flush with the street seem to impact a little harder, may need to swap mine out soon also. Or maybe my ass just needs more padding.

At $36 a piece why not just try it.

After looking here:
http://www.monroe.com/catalog/documents/08_MountingLengthSheet.pdf

Its obvious there is only one option for our cars.
I just may make an offset mounting plate for the rear axle to drop the shock down around 1.5" to compensate for the car being lowered.

I had the Monroe's on my rear in the MM and found they were harsh at first then mellowed out and then started leaking in less than 2 years. Went back to OEM and the ride is just right.

Put some QA1's on it.

Definitely not, another fine exapmle of aftermarket junk IMHO.
Thats why I sold them... I think to you :D

Wow I got a pair of OEMs for $110, of course that's at cost price. Could of just shipped them to you. lol Keep on the Monroe's after a while for leakage.

They recently had a part # "change" and my Dealer's cost is $99 a piece!

If you get time, check your source again for more current pricing.

Forgot the car you were talking about was the Blue 03. Mine is an 04 and falls under a different build date part number, that's probably where the difference is.

That shouldnt make a difference.
Humor me and call your parts guy for a current price.

And I liked them a lot over the stock shocks which were too soft to start with. I changed them 4 months after I bought it brand new.

After installing them I had much better control of the car and less wheel hop problems.

It was a stiffer ride but after a month I got use to them just fine.

They lasted until after I sold the car with 100,000 miles on it so I had no complaints or problems and I am sure the tech is better now than back then.

So decient ride and good control is all I can say and most of my customers liked both the shock and strut line of the senso tracks I installed on the cars.

List $78.47, cost $62.95 each. I replaced mine last summer I believe.

Even www.rockauto.com they are $70.79 each build before 12/03/03. After that build date is $67.79.

Anytime man!

They'll do fine for what you need them for. Mine lasted about 50k miles before one started leaking bad.

Sensatracs are garbage, I've installed probably over a thousand of em at work. Sometimes (quite often actually) they would come straight from the manufacturer already bad!

Monroe has become the Mcdonalds of shock absorbers lol. If you want a softer ride, new OEMS are the way to go.

Stay with the Tokico's... Zack, your compressor could be going south & the sensor for it has gone to sleep. Get rid of the airbags & go with the Interceptor HD coils. I did this & I really love the ride & handling. Good luck. Kenny ,from Canada.

Ive been installing Monroes on every one of my cars since I was 14 and not 1 ever leaked or let me down.

If I dont like them, Ill buy some OEM's again. I just dont have a lot of bread to be spending at the moment.

I hear that. Keep us posted on how they turn out. I've never put em on a panther before.

Zack, i have the Monroes all the way around. I'm happy with the ride and I don't bottom the shocks even with my 'ricer' stops and lowered stance over bigger wheels (makes the axle even closer to the frame).

It has a smooth ride. Easy compression. Not hard on rebound and good arrest of motion (no bouncy bouncy).

For the price and lifetime warranty, you can't beat em.

You've had the car ten years? Where is your time machine? You can have all my money and everything I own in exchange for it.
