$298 - replace my rear e-brake pads, shoes, they had to pull the axles out anyway to do the brake job - so I asked the LM service guy since they had to pull the axles could I bring them my brand new axles to install those (with the new bearings and seals - they said "yeah sure"
So I got my new dorman axles installed with new bearings and seals basically for free!

You do NOT have to pull the axles to replace the e-brakes, but I'm glad you're as good as new now.

Hey if they're going to charge you unneeded labor might as well make them put in your parts that needed to be installed with the unneeded labor charge. :D. That make sense to anybody else.

Strangely enough, that DOES make sense... :rasta:
I have all the parts & tools ready and waiting for Saturday...maybe I should go get a set of e-brake shoes just in case. :D

I don't know why they said that they needed to pull the axles to put on the new ebrake assy - they said it was a "kit" to replace it. I will ask about this later today when I pick up the car. They are a good LM dealer and I did see (2) police cruisers there -- they do good work and have a good rep etc.
I asked about new gear oil etc and they said that the new gear oil was included was included in the price to go the work for the ebrake kit. There has got to be a reason they wanted to pull the axles for this job. Noone here knows what it could possibly be??
WHAT THEY DID FIND: One of my spider gears was cracked! I think have to order a whole assembly. This *is* covered under my ESP, they said they have to order the assy. I wonder if they will notice that I have 3.73 gears. If they replace the spider gears with a whole carrier assembly I think I'll loose my CF clutches yes? They only have 30,000 on them... What do you all think about this ?

You are walking a fine line Babbage. I think they will figure it out, the PN#'s are diffrent then you'll be out of the ESP and into shop fees. I hope it all work's out for you in the end.

It's not like they are going to check the PN's on my ring and pinon.. even if they did I have that "magnusson moss act" ordeal to protect me
If spider gears are not avail as separate replace parts they will be replacing the whole carrier yes? in which case I loose my CF clutches..

This is just my experience but I have the Platinum plan ($50.00 deductable) and everytime I go in for service it's like they look for reasons to get me outside of the plan for service. That's the only reason I hav'nt gone wild with my mods just yet. It's the luck of the draw I guess...

I've only had it in once, for a trans issue. Was covered $100 deductable.
I told them I heard a recurring sound. Thought is was the axles, turned out it was the ebrake assy.
Can anyone think of any valid reason to pull the axles to replace the whole ebrake assy, shoes etc.??
I'm getting new spider gears out of the deal, probably new carrier bearings too - Ford is paying so I guess that's a "happy ending" - but I guess I'm feeling taken for a ride if there is no valid reason to do this.
WTF. I just want my car back! Another $100 deductable

Just got off the phone with the tech who did the work - they said that in order to pull the clips to get the ebrake assy off -- there isn't enough room to get the tool in there so they have to pull the axles out just a little bit. I AM getting a brand new Ford carrier assy - new clutches, new spider gears and carrier bearings. Ring and pinon are fine. (whoot) 3.73's stay. Sucks is I have to get a rental car now (Ford Pays) for 3 days until the parts come in.
Time to punish the rental...

To be honest no it is not a nessasary process and can be done without pulling the axles. Unfortunatly book time is what kills you because they go by that and not actual time to do the job and it takes into account a not so experianced Auto Tech working on it.
But if you pull the axle's the process of changing the shoe's out is much faster and easier especialy if the tech wants to make sure the backing plate is properly cleaned and rubbing points for the shoe's lubricated before reinstalation of the new shoe's and springs.
I use to sugest this to customers to allow me to do that so I could change the outer axle seal at the same time seeing that area is touched and looked @ so little over the years as a preventative measure.
If they allowed me to use that process I gave them a 10% discount for making it easier to do a better job plus it allowed a proper inspection on the rear end which almost never gets looked @ unless a problem is already present and being diagnosed.

Sweet. Thanks again Leo.
So far I have gotten: New Axles, seals, bearings, ebrakes both sides, new carrier with new carrier bearings installed!
Cost me $298 and now I get to drive a nice 2009 Ford Focus (leather, sunroof, blue (*sigh*) for 5 days as they have to ship the Ford carrier.
Nice little car - just picked it up. Free rental provided by my Ford ESP.
