When I got my 410s & TA cover installed I used almost 3 1 Quart Max Gear SAE 75W-140 Royal Purple gear oil :D

Fill it until it comes out the fill plug hole. NOT the one on the girdle, the one on the front of the differential by the yoke.

I was always told to fill it up 1-2 inches below the fill hole.

It will be blowing the gear oil out the vent hole and all over the place.
May even push it past the outer axle seals if it can not relieve the pressure fast enough.
But with putting your finger in the upper cover hole periodicly as you fill it up until you can dip your finger into the gear oil is fine and you can stop there.
Just don't forget the friction modifier while doing the fill up.
Try to use a good synthetic gear oil because it foams up a lot less than normal gear oil.
If you notice any gear oil poping out the pressure valve then you may have to let some out.

I was always told to fill it up 1-2 inches below the fill hole. Then you've been significantly under-filling it. The factory service manual specifies that the level be from .25" to .57" below the fill plug opening.
The listed quantity with a stock cover is 1.8L. With an aftermarket cover, just fill to the point referenced above.

The last service on the rear end on my MM took 2 1/2 quarts plus a bottle of friction modifier.

Use Redline fluid and you won't need friction modifier.
