View Full Version : Why does my trans whine?

Ever since i bought my Marauder, the trans has had a slight whine to it. At the end of last year the whine started getting worse. Now the trans will even make a hissing sound when cold. It does get progressively louder with rpm. The hiss goes away after a couple of shifts. The whine stays, but quiets down after the trans warms up. Just looking for some thoughts on what it could be. I plan on installing my P.I. torque con. and doing a J-mod soon.

Is it shifting harder than normal?
Do you have a check engine light on?
Did you check the fluid level?

I think it may be your rear thats doing the whining. The axles are common to wear and that caused a whine for me.

What speed and which gear(s) do you hear the whine??
Worn axles don't whine......they make a wump...wump...wump kind of sound!!
Most rear gears have harmonic whine....mine does it between 62 and 65 MPH.

It's the trans, not the rear axle.

One of the many trans rebuilds I went through had a whine. It still worked ok, just made a funny noise.

I've been given a couple of opinions. First was it could be coming from a bearing on the input shaft. The other was that the torque converter could be making the noise.

It's the trans, not the rear axle.
If the PCM detects a problem with slipping in the Tranny it will increase pressure to make them grab better.
This can cause a whineing type noise but usualy the PCm will set a code when this happens.
This is the reason why I asked about hard shifting and the Check engine light.
Again did you look @ the tranny fluid to see if it is low or smells and looks burnt.

i believe some whineing noise is normal especially at lower speeds.. dont know whay panthers do this but I have drivin probably 20+ different panthers with miles between 20 and mine 270,000K's and every one had some what of a whine. some a bit louder then others, mostly when accel or decell in 1st gear. at low speeds

I changed the tc, new fluid and filter, and a J-mod. No more whine :banana2:
Wait til you put the triple disk in there..... those sound god awful at idle......very chattery.

I did put it in. Idle is ok, and lockup is harsh. Can the lockup be softened up? The J-mod kicks ass. It fixed exactly what i was hoping it would. J-MOD FTW.

Tell me about your converter - what is it --what are the specs.
Also you may want a trans cooler - what temps are you seeing??

I have the same converter as you, and a big ass trans cooler. Trans is usually 180 to 190. Temps are taken from an Aeroforce gauge.
Yes the lockups can be softened.
You will have to ask Kurgan to email me your tune in .mtf format.

:) What are the dimensions of the "big ass" unit? where do mount it? Got pics? Again you just hooked up the new cooler and "disabled" the factory unit?
Those temps sound ideal if you get them all of the time. Aeroforce is hooked to a boss sensor in the pan?

It's the cooler that Dennis sells. Factory cooler disabled. The Aeroforce hooks up to the OBDll plug.
