I'm switching over to royal purple tranny fluid -

If I do the Jmod, but don't drain the TC, and refill with RP, am I going to have any issues or is it ok to do it like that?

And ask royal purple. Does it meet Ford's requirments for the tranny in the first place?

Although most synthetic fluids say they are compatable with other types of fluids they do admit their full ability is deminished due to the mixing.

From Royal Purple:

Max ATF is fully compatible and can be mixed with other automatic transmission fluids; however, for the best results drain or flush the current oil and then fill with Max ATF

Use the tranny fluid that meets or exceedes the Ford specs, Check your owners manual for the specs.

Right, I know to use Mercon V, but I'll be running RP in the rear end, and in the motor, and figured I'd change over the tranny fluid while I was in there as well. I guess I'll call up ford and ask em.

How do you drain the TC once the pan is dropped? Is it easy?

Ford won't tell you anything useful. They'll just cover their ass and tell you to use what the owner's manual recommends. RP is an excellent fluid and you'll have no issue at all with mixing it, as long as your current fluid is not oxidised or contaminated.

As for draining the torque converter, you can't. They decontented the TC drain plug back in '01. You'll have to do a complete fluid exchange, either with a T-Tech machine or by using the backyard DIY method to get it all out.

Ah I see. So I should be ok just doing it the old fashioned way, drop pan, change filter, fill with RP?

Dropping the pan dosn't let all of the fluid out the torque converter still holds a lot inside of it as well.

Find some place that can do a fluid exchange with a machine. I'm sure they will let you supply your own fluid. Using a machine is the only way to get all the fluid out.

I seen a plug under the tranny a lil bit before geting to the pan and thought that was how to drain the tranny?

Just dropping the pan will not even net you half the fluid. Since you are doing the Jmod, that would help you get out an additional 4 or so quarts out. You still have the cooler, lines, TC, and still a good amount in the trans. I wouldn't waste my money on RP unless I was getting a full rebuild, and that would still be a maybe.

I'll have to completely refill the tranny anyways, so the price difference between mercon V and RP will be worth it just so I'll be running RP throughout the entire car.

I'll look into getting a flush to get rid of all the old fluid.

Dont bother with RP trans fluid, its not gonna get you anything but an empty wallet.

If you insist, you must crack all the valve body bolts loose and let the car sit about 12-24 hours before the TC will drain most of the fluid out.
