Other than making a couple of n00b mistakes that cost me some time and frustration (one would think I'd never worked on a car before  ), while also accidentally teaching the next-door neighbour's kids some new profanity, I managed to get the job done without loss of life.
For one brief shining moment I thought I had lucked out and it was the e-brake making the noise. Alas, it was not to be. Both e-brake assemblies were...well...ca-ca, hardware and all, but that's a story for another thread. The driver's axle was fine but I figured with 132,xxx I may as well put the new one in. Passenger side was obviously the culprit. Pix will be up as soon as the person who know how to run the camera gets home from choir practice.
I put the new axles, bearings, seals, etc together and took Phoebe for a ride around the block. (Unlike Dominick I remembered to put new gear oil back in. :D) Hooray!....blissful silence.
I must admit that I didn't enjoy doing this job as much as I would have years ago; it was only the fact that I'm cheap and hate paying someone to do something I'm perfectly capable of. I AM proud of myself for doing it, though, and will use the money saved to buy Bunny something nice.

It's nice doing you own work isn't it? Pretty amazing how quiet it is now huh?

Yes, the difference is significant. This must have been building up slowly, but I didn't notice until it got really bad.
We got a Grand Marquis rental for our vaca in California 2 weeks ago and it was very quiet inside. Phoebe is just like that now (except for the exhaust tone :D ).

after driving the bronco for 2 months and then taking the mm out for the first time in the same 2 months, its amazing how much quieter it is on the inside then the bronc.

Did you have a lot of metal debris on the Magnet??
When I pulled my plug the bright metal on the magnet resembled a silver bird wing!!!

I pulled an axle on a 78 caprise classic i owned years ago(long story) anyway there was an 1/8" groove in the axle where the bearing touched...it was so perfectly machined into the axle for a brief moment I thought it was supposed to be there.

Save the left one for someone who could use a spare. The right one can be used to keep a chained Pit Bull from escaping the yard.

Funny you say that, I always take my good one to the track in case anyone with 28's snaps one.

Too bad its not as simple as a GM rear to replace a axle.
Glad it worked out Bob, that axle looked like mine after only 65K miles.

Cool - good for you. You used the Dormans that I posted yes? They look to be solid/well made. (Dare I say 35% stronger - lol) I had my local LM install mine for free - got a new carrier out of the deal too (and a 2009 focus for 5 days) I got to look at the axles and the right side was "ca-ca" as you say I didn't get a picture but they had a kind of alternating pattern on them almost like the pattern frozen roller bearings would make. I felt it with my finger and it was not smooth at all. I can't wait to get my MM back - should be tuesday.
Glad I could help albeit indirectly. :D

You used the Dormans that I posted yes? They look to be solid/well made. Yes, from Rock Auto. Interestingly, one axle came with studs already installed and a bag with 5 more loose and 5 chrome lugnuts just like the stock MM ones. The other one came with just the loose studs, which I had to install.
Glad I could help albeit indirectly. Yes you did...thanks again. :)

If I remember correctly, the 31 spline axles I ordered from Rock Auto were shipped from New Jersey. I wonder if the NJ axle plant(?) also ships to Ford?
Mine had studs & ABS rings installed.

Hmmm - this thread came to mind....right after the shop down the way who's doing my 4.10 install called and said "You need axles".....:o
They said they didn't quite believe it because the original seals & bearings (which they were instructed to replace from the FRPP install pack since they were all up in my gal's beehind) looked good....I think RoyL's OASIS report for me showed somebody did something back there back in the day....
Wasn't until they were wiping things down for re-assebly that they saw the pitting....
Going to try to score the Dormans or an equivalent with availability so as no not leave her hanging on the lift too long...
Ah - I love when I have a photographic memory of a thread having read it and wondered to myself 'I wonder if that'll happen to me?" LOL
Curious as to how quite the car will be now...don't really think she was all that loud but I don't hear much of anything but my exhaust since the install of he Kooks/Hi Flows/H and my trusty Flowmaster 40's a couple weeks back :D
Best,
Jonathan

Thanks Paul - it was already at a shop for gears when they went to put humpty-dumpty all back together and saw the pitting. Forgot to ask if it was one or both sides but I'm sure I'll find out when I go get the car later...

Part number for the Dorman kit for a Marauder with 28 splines is: 630-214
Rockauto.com has them. Rolled spline axles, new seals, new bearings order qty (2).
My car is like butter now. New axles, new tires with roadforce etc..
Dormans are good quality at a good price. Mine were pitted with only 57K. And I changed the lube shortly after I got the car (gear change)
