View Full Version : AC blowing out defrost vent?

Hopped in the car today to grab some lunch, and when I hit the AC, it was coming out of the defroster vent and not the normal vents. After a few minutes it started blowing out of the normal vents, but I thought this was kind of weird. What's up?
I never use the AC, but the 5 feet of fury that was with me dictated otherwise. http://www.exodusgaming.net/Smileys/default/whip2.gif
Its likely your EATC is dying....or you have a vacuum leak, tho there are other possibilities those two are common causes. Not too hard to fix

$5.10 for a bag of o-rings and an hour of your time and you'll have 5 feet of calm...

Or buy one already rebuilt and tested for a price +core and shipping. I have sold 3 of these so far.

Or...
Send me your EATC and I'll replace the o-rings for a nominal charge + return shipping.

First would double check as stated above for a vac leak, you never know...

Yah, I'll check. Would this render the car unusable until I got it back?

No, just plug one of the vacuum hose openings after you remove the EATC.
On the other hand, removing the LCM will render your MM's lights & turn signals inoperable.

I got super busy and kind of let this die. I read through the stickied thread at the top and I wouldn't mind attempting this myself.
The only thing I'm not really sure about is what O-Rings to get? Can you point me to a specific one that I can perhaps pick up at a local auto/hardware store?
Thanks!

I was hoping to find them locally since I have time to do it today. If I can't I'll take you up on that offer.

OK. I got mine, as did several others, from McMaster-Carr.

That doesn't look like anything I can pick up locally.

What I have found is that a Silicone O-ring, in the common '-007' size, is about a perfect fit. McMaster-Carr http://www.mcmaster.com p/n 9396K12. $5.10 +tax/shipping will get you a bag of 100.
If you can find them that size locally, be sure they're silicone (orange) otherwise you'll be doing the job again in a few years.
McMaster-Carr is very good about shipping quickly. I ordered mine online and they were delivered in a few days.

Hey buddy, can you send me some O-rings too? I'm gonna do this repair soon also. My a/c blows out the defrost when I first cut it on for about a minute, then it will switch to blowing out the vents like it should.

O-rings for the Marauder were on my first ever order from McMaster-Carr. I ordered them at work one morning, on line. When I got home, the package was waiting only.
I know it was a fluke due to the fact that their Atlanta Distribution Center must be near UPS's hub in Atlanta, but it still shocked me.

I'm just outside of Raleigh, N.C. and the same thing happened. Ordered just after 1200, had them the next day.

Thanks to Dakslim for the o-rings!
So I pulled everything out, got the new rings in, and buttoned her up in decent time. Fired up the AC and no dice... Still going through the defrost. After some swearing, I figured it was something else and put it all back together to come report my findings here.
After I started cleaning up I noticed that I left one of the ****** ****ing ***** ****** *** *****ing **** slugs and springs out. So I took the whole damn thing apart again and put in the missing pieces. Turned on the AC and she blew cold out of the correct vents!
So after a little bump because of my own dumbass, it was an overall successful event! Thanks everyone for the help. :)
