black would be good, if they had the same color as your wheels that would be sweet too. i was even pondering silver for when i hit the lotto and get wilwoods.

Honestly powder coating is the best way, quite a few people I know have done the DIY home kit with great and lasting results if done properly.

It is a PITA to paint them yourself with the long cure times and all the prep work involved. If you have some spare hours and are bored do it yourself but if I had to do it again I would have them powder coated:twocents:

If it's ^ that big of a pain in the butt, just use spray engine enamel. Just prep with some brakleen and then paint them sumb1tches.

Most engine paint is rated at 500 F and the caliper paint I used was 900 F...I doubt I will ever get them above 500F but it was the piece of mind.

If you are going to do something do it right the first time and do it to make it last or don't bother doing it at all.

How hot do you think your brakes get? Dot 3 Brake fluid boils at about 400 F (fresh in the bottle) and about 285 F (wet/"used"). So if you aren't boiling your brake fluid, the paint is nowhere near its max temp.

I have already boiled my brake fluid on two of my cars...I had to drive my SHO home 25 miles with no brakes when I lived in Italy. All around not a good time...I wont be repainting this time that I know.

Do you road race?

Dave, when I G2'd my calipers (off the car), I was able to do two heavy coats with enough for about half an application left over. Besides a couple chips from carelessness on my part, they have survived very well, still nice and brite. I just did the job at night and installed them carefully the next morning.

I have a few times, but nothing that I do on a normal basis.

You should probably change your brake fluid a little more often, then. The more water it absorbs (the older it is) the lower the boiling point. Almost always when that happens (aside from the track) it's not because your brakes got much hotter than normal its that the brake fluid is degraded and is boiling when its not supposed to be.

Yea I was playing with a little Italian rice rocket a few weeks after new fluids, pads and rotors but I pushed the stock brakes way past what they could handle...Lesson learned

I'm pissed the new calipers I ordered months ago and I think within a month they were already starting to rust up. I'm going to have to take them off sometime soon and clean then paint them.

You guys that are painting the calipers, are you just cleaning the calipers, or are you doing any prep work to smooth the caliper before painting it? I'm talking about using a dremel tool and sandpaper to give it a very smooth finish. Is anybody doing that?

I used a red 3M scotch brite pad wheel for automotive paint stripping that worked out really well to take off the old paint and get down to the metal, I tried a wire wheel at first but didn’t have great results. I also used an air gun to get rid of most of the debris followed by caliper prep spray that was recommend by the manufacture.

Duplicolor's VHT line of paint has a high temp ceramic based adhesion promotor/primer that is sandable and helps to make the surfacae a lot smoother.

Part # SP148

It helps the paint to stick better and can handle high temps easily. After spraying a few coats and letting it dry over night it is sandable. Then you can paint it any color you want.
