Hey guys. its been probably been a year since i been on these forums. My marauder now has 58k miles.I probably only accumulated 8 thousand miles in three years.
Well anyway I put some investment in my marauder , and I was thinking about investing more to get the KOOKS Complete Long Tube Headers and Exhaust for $1600. (sorry guys, s/c out of the question!)

Can anyone that has them give me some input on them performance wise, sound wise (I already have flowmaster 40's so I'm wondering how much louder it will be). Thanks :cool4:

From what Ive read and seen Stainless Works are better. I'd look at those too.

Check out this thread "A Nice Pair" (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=61423&highlight=nice+pair) in which you can see the dyno runs and results of my Marauders with Kooks LTH and X-pipe.

I have Kooks and like them, but have never installed SW headers. Most people who have installed both brands will tell you to go with the SW.

The only 2 things I can say is:

#1 you do not have to jack the engine up to install them.

#2 you can easily access the starter once they are in

If you want to keep the heat down get a good ceramic coating on them.

And no matter what you get the stage 8 locking header bolts is a good idea seeing you can use 2 differnt type's of tools to put them on the way they are made.

thanks guys. i was researching on the SW headers. but they seem to cost $2300+ for the longtube headers and their mauex exhaust kit that goes with It! YIKES. Kind of out of my budget right now. Because I wouldnt want to just get the SW longtube headers and say jus their high flow cats but then still have the restrictive stock rear and mid section of the exhaust system. If I get an exhaust system I want it to be the whole exhaust from the headers to the rear. Still debating...thanks for the info guys

I'm running Kooks w a Summit Racing X-pipe and Borla mufflers 2.5 inches pipes all the way. Ttl cost incl. install was 1300.00 USD I put about 10k miles on the system and still like it. no leaks etc. They have turned colors from silver to a gold color but other that is all the changes I have noticed. The welds still look like the hold. I hope it helps

...but then still have the restrictive stock rear and mid section of the exhaust system.

It really isn't as bad as you may think.

Plus you're talking about mufflers anyway.

Unless you're bent on getting 3 inch exhaust all the way, in which case I'd say get the headers and high flow cats then shop around and have a shop make the rest of the piping for you and then pick out your mufflers of choice for tonality.

if money is tight this is what i would do, just buy the headers and midpipe. the rest of the system wont yield you very much power. i have kooks but would go with the SW. my kooks perform great, but fit like ****. i also REUSED the factory hardware and gaskets.

The H-pipe on back in the system is fine for being a non S/C car and you will get a great new sound and some extra power just with the headers and high flow cats.

You only need to open the exhaust up more when your running a lot more power on the engine.

Reusing the factory gaskets is a must.

I have Kooks Headers and high flow cats. The rest of the system is stock including my mufflers. It sounds great and looked great all these years later.

BTW I bought them used and they still look just as good as the day I aquired them.

hey guys thanks on the info. Now that I got some more info down from you guys, I am thinking about getting the Lt headers from either Kooks or SW(probably SW),with the high flow cats andthe x pipe and leaving the rest of the system as it is ( with my flowmasters and rest of the stock piping).

Yea i know! It's been a while...shes just sitting in the garage but i warm her up every week and try to drive it atleast ten miles a week. I'm feeling like getting her loosened up with the longtube headers high flows and x pipe...very tempting.

I was quoted by a very good reputation nice ford mustang shop and they charged me $500 for the install. They are kind of high end but they sure are good, i got my 4.10s installed there. I'd still like to shop around to try to save money but I wouldn't feel comfortable binging it to a mieneke shop . Sounds kinda steep what do you guys think?

YES... bought the kooks longtube headers high flow cats with x pipe going to my flowmaster 40s...cant wait!!! Ill post another thread with pics and videos once its installed!! next step is definitely a shop dynotune on my sct. Thanks a bunch on the help guys.

Leo with those headers are you using I have the 4 high flow cats or 2, I know the stock ones come with 4 cats, i was just wondering if going with long tube headers we run only 2 cats ?

The SW Maucat system comes with 2 high flow cat's only and a connection pipe that goes from the back of the cats to the H-Pipe that also houses the rear bung holes for the rear 02 sensors.

The long tube headers have the bungs for the front 02 sensors. So the set up eliminates 1 set of cats on the car.

Nice so basically from 4 cat to 2, i bet your check engine light come up right ?

+2. Headers on an N/A car don't give you much, terrible bang for the buck unless you go s/c.

Not at all I have the 4 02 sensors in and they sit right where they should. No lights no problems.

It's when someone screws up and puts the bungs in the wrong place when a code might come up.

As long as you have them before and after the cats you are good to go.

Kooks long tube headers made a huge difference for me, and I was NA at the time. One of the best power mods I ever did while NA.

LT headers and 2.5 inch tubing will make a huge difference, and should be one of the first mods you do. It will net you more power, and if you do any power adders in the future (cams, or even SC) your will get the maximum gain from them.

Thanks For comming to the rescue I didn't want to argue about it.

But headers long or short have been a mainstay in performance up grades on non S/C cars for many many years so it will always be a good idea to put them on a performance car.

It's a lot of money yes like most up grade's or mod's now a days but in the end worth it if you can swing them.

Thanks again guys

Definately :D I think it's a harder decision for these cars because they are so pricey, but on any other car, like a mustang or a camaro ect, headers are a must have. Can't beat that sound. And hey, an extra 10-20hp? Why not :burnout:

This year I'll be going with the full Kooks package, I might go with different muffs though. I wish SW made LT's for the vics.

Next year comes the Trickflow twisted wedge top end kit. 380hp out of a 2v with the stock plastic intake. :D

I had stock manifolds, and then 2.5" exhaust behind that with 2 hi flow cats. My best MPH at the track was 109.9
I put on LT headers with 3" collectors and full 3" exhaust, my MPH in the 1/4 mile went up to 118

PS Nice pics man, the headers look good too :2thumbs:
