Greetings!

I have an exhaust shop literally down the road and around the corner from my house. I'll be installing my Kooks headers @ home, and I was wondering if I can drive my car to the shop to get the cats installed? The car will be running with open headers for less than 10 mins., and that includes starting it up. No boost, partial throttle down the street. I will install the front o2 sensors for the trip, and tying up the x-pipe with metal wire so it doesn't go anywhere. Any unforseen problems?

TIA,

No problem there. I know more than a couple members who have done the same. Enjoy the extra power and sound once your all back together and tuned.

When I did this the O2's never heated up and I had to set the A/F at 22 to 1 to get it to run like normal.

+1.
Probably will throw an emissions/O2 code.

It will get really loud when you crack the throttle more than 1/8 open....
Just try to stay clear of the LEOs, and if you see one make sure that you close the throttle ASAP.

BTW: I drive with open headers all the time....:D

God I love that 427 Cobra Joe, I am completely green w/envy. One of my favorite cars of all time. I have only ever seen 1 original in my life, nice to see yours is absolutely mint.

I want factory 5 version someday because I know I can never afford an original.

I have open manis right now, not really driving it besides moving the car (ok and going up and down the block and doing a few burn outs, have to test the motor ya no ;)) and she runs fine. Loud as hell, the neighbors don't seem to like it - just waiting for my down pipes then it will be sealed.

I've always wanted one these Cobras, even if it's not an original. I fell in love with them when I was a kid. There's a place called D&M Motorsports in the Chicago suburbs that makes custom order replicas using motors up to around 1,000hp (at least they did last time I was there a couple years back).

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I'm sure my neighbours won't like it, but it won't be for long. And Joe, that Cobra is awesome! There's one or two here that usually come out to our Sunday night gatherings. I'm pretty sure one of them is real, the other's are Factory Fives.

If you run your car with just the headers and nothing beyond the header tips make sure anything combustible or meltable is out of range. You will be shooting flame on hard acceleration and sudden deceleration. Use the back roads to get to your muffler shop and/or have a spotter run ahead of you and report on a two way walkie if a LEO is approaching as your car will be loud even under partial throttle. Good luck. Post some sound clips if you can.

Hello all,

One more question, if the rear o2 sensors are turned off in the tune, the sensors are no longer needed, correct? I can remove them from the system? That way I don't have to get the shop to install another set of o2 bungs after the cats.
