View Full Version : Where and when did you first see The Marauder?

I actually remember this being a concept car when I was 13 or 14. I didn't follow it until production, but I do remember seeing the concept car before production.

I saw a few in a dealer before I ever saw one on the road. The first one I ever saw on the road was mine actually.

What about you?

I had never ever heard of them until I found one on Autotrader one day when I was looking to get out of my Galant and into something nice. Had no clue what it was until I searched it on wikipedia, saw it had 302hp V8 engine and took it for a test drive. Loved it, made it happen.

I believe it was 2001, maybe 2000. I was looking at "barely" used Impala SS's. (Even nearly bought one from one of the mods on the SS site). I saw a little article in Hot Rod about the Marauder, and being a Ford man, decided to wait for it.

I first heard about the Ford Blackhawk concept in Motor Trend or one of the other car magazine. My son called it to my attention and said "You gotta check out one of these when it comes out." Somehow the Blackhawk concept ended up morphing into the Marauder.

Saw my first Marauder sitting on the Mercury Dealer lot in Fairfax, VA in 2002. My son tried to get me to sit in it and take a test drive. I refused 'cause I knew it could only lead to "problems" since I have a very weak resistance. :o

Waited until October 2003 before I took my test drive in the Bluerauder. I drove home with it the same day. :D Didn't even know that Blue MMs existed until the morning of the day I bought mine.

Heard the bosses wife talking about it, I checked it out, had to have it, and picked one up. I rubbed it into her face from day one and since that day we never got along again (seriously)and so I finally quit.

I had a very similar experience.
My brother had bought a 2000 CV and put a nice set of Cobra 'R' wheels on it along with a performance chip and a set of 3.55s w/Eaton posi.
After a test drive in it, I started looking at new CV with the intention to make a CV 'Sport' model.
(this was before the real Sport model was available)

Then, I saw a little article in a car magazine about the upcoming 'Mercury Marauder' model.

SOLD!

I waited for well over a year for the Marauder to become a reality.

I had been saving for a Mustang for my 40th B-Day as a present to me after paying off the Grand Marquies.

I was going through the Ford website and building a few to see what I wanted and how much.

For Ha Ha's I went to the Mercury Web site to see what the new Grand Marquies were costing now and accidently ran into the Marauder on the site.

Did some research on it right then and there and made a decision to get it instead of the Mustang.

Used the web site to put out a general request about my wanting one Black with a moon roof and told everyone what I had for a down payment and what I could afford for monthly payments.

2 Dealers wrote me back the first said maybe we can put you in a used one for those payments other wise we can not help you.

The second one wrote we found the Marauder you want and can get it in your hands on or around your Birthday. Come down and see us and we will make it happen.

Needless to say the rest was history.

I saw a early built one at Delray Lincoln Mercury. When I saw it, I could've done with out the black paint, Premium Fuel, and the uneven sized tires. 2 1/2 years later, I bought one and made many friends here and there with it.

Late fall of 2002. Bill Smith FLM in Southern Pines had two of them on the lot.

I had one of those visceral reactions (I NEED this car!), but the color, and the MSLP, turned off my wife and I (Terry's not a big fan of black cars).

Fast forward to Feb. of 2004, saw my first DTR, had started working for a company that had an X Plan with Ford, cash rebates and AARP discounts were being offered, took the wife car shopping in April; the rest, as they say, is history.

I first saw the Marauder in the one and only commercial they ever made for it. I think I'm the only person to see the commercial run on TV. Anyways, the first time I saw the car in person was October 2002. I was picking up my then new '02 Taurus SEL at the dealership and they had a Marauder in the showroom. I fell in love instantly with the looks of the car, not so much the MSRP (It was $46,000 Cdn.)

Fast forward to April '05, my brother told me there was an '03 Marauder back at the dealership. Went down to go see it, test drove it, told them to get the paperwork ready to trade in my '04 CVLX (which I just got 6 months prior). The rest is history.

I remember the talk about a Cobra Vic then that got cancelled and finally Mercury introduced the Marauder concept from that point I was sold. Got one of the first one available from the dealer and have had total happiness ever since.

Other than in pictures I had never seen a Marauder until I picked mine up. I purchased it sight unseen while I was still in Italy and didnt get to actually see it until 5 weeks later...Im glad I liked it. I had been overseas since 2002 so I never even heard of them until I asked a friend what I should replace one of my SHO's with and he lead me in the direction on the Marauder.:burnout:

I saw a black 04 on the show room floor when we were looking for my wife a new car. I begged her to get it but she said it looked like her grandma's car, Plus the dealer wanted 10,000 on top of sticker for adjusted market value.

We had a 2000 CV that was always in the shop. One day while waiting for them to fix it I saw the sales guy hanging the MM poster in the showroom. Went back that nite with Ms.D and talked to the sales guy. He didn't know much about them and had never seen one. While waiting for Ms.D to come home from work I went on the net a found out what I could about the MM. The dealer found a blue in CT and I was all set as I like blue but Ms.D didn't want a dark color so we asked what other colors it came in and the only light color was silver, The sales guy couldn't find a 2003 silver nearby so we asked how much for an 04. Price with the trade on the 2K CV worked for us and the rest is history. When the car came in the sales guy was showing it to another couple and I think they bought a black from him that night too. Love the car. It has been very dependable aside from some annoying minor squeaks and such. By the by there was a piece of paper in the glovebox that said the car was a factory QC car which explained the 75 miles on the OD.

I remember the concept displayed at the New York Auto show back in 2001. Saw my first one in Marlow Heights, MD down the street from Darcars Lincoln Mercury in July 2002. I was driving my Mom's Aspire with my Learner's permit by myself of course and I noticed an elderly couple taking a Blk 03 for a test drive with a D-tag. They drove slowly of course and I was doing the same thing in the next lane drooling and holding up traffic lol.

I believe for me it was 2004 when I saw JustBob's. He let me drive it, and I remember thinking these pedals are weird. I then hit the gas when I meant to hit the brake because the pedal configuration just felt unnatural at the time. But then I felt the car, and have loved it ever since. especially when I was beating it at the track in my Mustang, but then Bob hit up the mods, and now has groceries in 12 seconds or less (oh and a drag racing ticket with me)

Since the Blackhawk project I kept my eyes on this hoping one day they sell something.....When I got wind the Marauder was coming, I talked to a Lincoln/Mercury salesman who didn't even know about it. He invited me to attend the salesman training session with the traveling prototype Marauder and trainer. I grabbed their display model off the truck.

If you're talking about the parking garage commercial, I'm the other guy that saw it. When my local dealer got a 300A in stock, I liked what I saw and after it sat on the lot for six months (and Ford offered 0% APR) I bought it.

A few parts were replaced under warranty, but I'm still running the same Motorcraft battery that came with it. I'm kinda curious how long it's gonna last. :)

I was about 12 yrs old, I was up early on the weekends as usally so I could watch all the car shows like car&driver, hp tv etc . When I believe It was motorweek and they were showing this elegant muscular 4 door and I remember saying to myself if I ever own a four door I'd probaly get that! Well years went buy and I still wanted that car so when finally met my chance I got it as my first car! Bought it from a real estate guy that used it for weekends and how much I love it!

I think that was someone on here who had it originally.

As far as Motorweek I thought they tested a suped up Crown Vic, not a Marauder. Can anyone find the Marauder video with Motorweek?

October 2002, I was looking at Mercury GM on the web. I found MM.Net and a guy by the handle of "Mensray" I think, ask people here ( on MM.net) to come to Indy and view the first Kenny Brown Marauder. Got up Saturday morning and made the drive. There I had the pleasure of meeting Kenny Brown and he let both the wife and myself drive his CV. Never seen one again until Feb 2003 at the very frist "Windy City Chicken run", put together by Mac. I think we had about 8 Marauders lined up. So I attended the meets and our first Dyno meet, then I knew I wanted one so I sold my Lincoln Mark VII. On Janurary 16, 2004 I finally got one.

First saw it going along a street i was making a left onto. It stayed on my mind so started doing research on it and liked what i read, but still large payment on car i was currently driving. Only one slightly negative review writen about. Was driving in Mississippi five months later with brother and ended up having to use a hospital parking lot to make a u turn. There in one of the spots was a black one. Told him that was going to be my next car. Had to wait till January 05 to get around that personal property payment thing.

DAAAAAAMN.....

I saw the "garage" commercial on Tv.. and i was like WHOA!

i am only 23, so i cannot relate to the previous generation.

But, at 16 years old, i knew the car i wanted, and i wanted it BAAAD.

I was given a 1990 Lincoln towncar, (was my late grandmothers car) with the very underpowered 5.0 liter V8 engine.. i think it pushed out 157 HP.... Black on Black signature series... with the plush felt interior.

i had dreams of turning that car into a hotrod... this car did not have a mass airflow sensor on it. so i "built" my own intake out of 3 inch PVC piping, and a sewer rubber connection thingy i bought a homedepot to attach it to the manifold. and it WORKED WONDERS.... i swear i pushed an extra 50HP out of it, because the original deal (which i still have) must have had a 1 3/4 inch reducer on it.. to really LIMIT that torque (and sound, which i think that was the idea) .... but once the engine could breathe for the first time.. it SCOOTED!

but... thanksgiving of 2005, (my grandmothers holiday) i was T-Boned on the passengers side by an idiot. i walked away... the idiot did not.

after that, i found the only other car to replace it, a 2003 Mercury Marauder from Carmax... had no credit.. but "made it happen" with my mom's cosigning and took that baby home.. Black on Black.. with a trunk organizer. with a Fleetwood Mac CD still in the player (i knew this car was taken care of at this point)

turns out (Could be salesperson bullcrap.. but ill tell you)

the guy traded the car in, he was a mid 40's guy who married a cuban lady and had twins... he wouldnt put the carseats in the marauder, and always took the kids in her Jetta, but they needed a bigger car.. the BIOTCH forced him to sell the marauder and buy a MINIVAN (EEEEEEEKKKK :puke: )
otherwise.. she was gonna ditch him.

so, it happened.. and ended up on the lot. and he bought a Sienna. (even trade i think)

so after sitting on the lot for 6 days, I signed my life away (at 11.5% interest) and took it home.

that night, after peeling the "carmax" sticker off the trunk. i took it to the local Swap Shop Drive In Theatre and kissed the steering wheel through the entire movie..

my girlfriend was not upset, but frazzled over my obsession with this car. she liked it herself. and really thought it was sexy. (she drives a 5 speed mustang)

when she asked to drive it.. and i said "ohhh noooo" then... she got pissed. but after compromising, with "breaking in" the back seat. she drove the car, and loved it.

now at 97K miles... i look back, and love the decision i made. i bought the car on 6-6-2006. and spite how unlucky that may seem... the car has broke down 5 times... but NEVER driving it... broke a coolant hose... the minute i pulled into my driveway one time... my headlights wouldnt turn on.. but they turned off, right as i got into the driveway..

Pardon my ESSAY.. but this car, is like no other.

"And thats what i did on my summer vacation"

yThe first one that I saw was at the then Norwalk Raceway Park (now Summit Rcaeway Park) in Ohio and this guy named Barry (cruztaker) had just put a shiney new set of headers on his car that I thought was a souped up MGM.
He gave me the quick lowdown on the Marauder and what was being made available to modify them.
I later saw one close to my own neighborhood and got to hear it run and decided that it was time to kiss my T-bird super coupe goodbye in favor of a MM. ;)

I remember hearing about it and thinking it was a re-dressed Grand Marquis. I was obviously wrong! I didn't think about it for years afterward due to Ford's crappy advertising campaign. But then I started seeing the car occasionally on the street, and went GA-GA....What a COOOOOOOOOOOOL car! Finally in 2008, I found one I liked, the wife ok'd and here I am ADDICTED to the Marauder!

First saw the car July 27,2002 at Village L/M in Irving TX. I had heard about the cars & was interested since I was driving a boring Jaguar 4 door. A friend had told me about the Parnelli Jones video featuring the new MM, on the Friday nite before. The wife & I viewed the video & she said "Why don't you buy that & quit complaining about the Jag." So the next morning we went to the nearest L/M dealer & bought the car. My great negotiating skills got the car for list price. Never looked back.

The first time I heard of the Marauder was just before it came out. There was an article about it in the automotive section of the Indianapolis Star. I too had read an article about Mercury debuting a "new" Marauder. Then, later heard the concept would be at the Cleveland Autoshow...which it was...with a Convertible version too! I was hooked on it. I had an '88 CV Police version so I was psyched to get an upgrade...the CV was long in the tooth, high mileage, etc.

This is a good story. Back in early 2001, I was at the Ford plant in Wixom MI for training on the newly released Lincoln LS. Part of the training included a plant tour. During the tour I noticed 2 black Grand Marquis' and a black Crown Vic with a odd looking hood. I asked" What are those cars over there?". The trainer replied "Those are Marauder test mules." I told him I had seen the concept car but was not aware that it would be built. He said "yea it's a go but it's in the early stages of development." He also added" There's another one up on the hill. One of my co workers test drove it and the hood flew up and smashed the windshield. I guess he thought we wouldn't miss a $140,000 development car so he parked it up on the hill." When I asked about the powertrain he told me the two Grand Marquis' had 4.6L 4V engines and the Crown Vic had a supercharged 4.6L 2v engine (thus the funky hood). He added they had just decided to equip the cars with the n/a 4V engine.
I knew that day I would own one. That following June Steve Babcock was at the All Ford Nationals in Carlisle PA promoting the car. I introduced myself to him and told him I was waiting to order mine. He was very personable and answered all my questions with enthusiasm. One year later in June 2002 I took delivery of the first Marauder in Charlotte, NC. That's an interesting story too but I'll share that one later.

I was driving to go look at a 99 gtp at the local Honda dealership. I was on my way to hopefully buy it. I got distracted by this tiny dealer with 5 maybe 6 cars. I saw on top of a hill a black 03 mm so I pulled in real quick and bought it without even looking at the gtp. Best decision I ever made!! :banana2:

Good decision you made!

I saw my first Marauder in the late '80s.
It was a blue '64 with a 390.
I still see the car from time to time, it's my uncle's. He bored/stroked it to 427 cubes, the car is absolutely perfect, it was an Arizona car.
Also I remember reading some old HRMs and they had pics of the NASCAR Marauders from the early 60s.

It was back when I was in college in about 2002 and I remember I was supposed to be working. Instead, I messed around and got on the internet and started looking around for cars. I saw this site that had an article on this new mercury that was based on the Impala SS and instantly fell in love with it. Called my co-worker over to check it out and told him, I'm gonna get one of those! The next year and a half they were everywhere! (I'm from Detroit) Well, I eventually got one, took me 6-7 years, but I got one!

Had anyone posted this review before? If so, my apologies. http://www.newcartestdrive.com/review-intro.cfm?Vehicle=2003_Mercury _Marauder&ReviewID=2477

When I bought my Marauder used, the stealership gave me a copy of this review with the carfax.

In 03 I saw my first one a a dealership in St Charles IL, I Was a Airborne Express driver and was making a delivery at Negri Mercury. I had never seen one before and it was love at first sight! But after I looked at the window sticker I knew I would have to wait. I went home that evening and told my wife " I just saw my next used car today" Last spring I finally got that 03 black beauty. Its been a blast so far and thank goodness for the members on this site with so much knowledge and so many helpful tips that have made ownership a little more affordable. My car needs a little help in areas but draws a lot of looks and is a blast to drive!

I bought a really nice '04 Grand Marquis in 2008. Shortly after looking more into the car and modding it a little, I found out about the Marauder. Regretted buying the Marquis and after 2 1/2 years of owning it, I totalled the Marquis (unintentionally) and had the opportunity to finally get my hands on a Marauder!...now I just need a Trilogy...

in Feb of 2003 i was looking to buy a new car - i wanted anything but a Lin/Merc because a have a limo company and wanted something not Ford - i looked around at other brands and did not really see anything that jumped out at me other than an 02 Trams Am Ram Air - but i did not want a leftover from the year before - so the guy I buy all my cars for the business from kept telling me about this Black Marauder - (did not want black because every car i own is black for the limo business) - they had a special going on the Marauder - 0% financing - that got me hooked - also they had a upgrade package avalible from DR (tune -410's - driveshaft - extra $1500) so out the door it went - the wife thought a was crazy for getting it because it was black - i have made alot of good freinds because of this car - plan on giving it to my son someday

I was working at a Mercury dealership in 02 when we got our first one. Everyone was underwhelmed by its performance to price tag ratio, and it sat on the lot for the better part of a year. I liked it but couldn't afford it at the time.

Unsure where I was (Reading Road & Track?) but when I saw the Bondurant Cobra Crown Vic, I thought it was a great combination. I've always been a fan of CVs.

Then, I think that I saw one at the Philly Auto Show and remember the commercial where the cars on either side of the MM step aside and knew that the Bondurant car had been built.

I presumed the op referred to the "Panther Marauder"...I remember the "originals" as well. I used to have a '65 Comet Cyclone, and was reminded of the Marauder origins of the checkered flag medallions that also adorned the Cyclone fenders. My Cyclone was Wimbledon White, and had the red checkered flags.
