Check it out, my insulator was looking kinda *****y. So i pulled it and cleaned it and painted it flat black. I then made a 16" diameter stencil of the Mercury god and stenciled it on there. Cost= $0 Just my time.

Yeah, making the stencil/template eats up more time than the actual application.

That stencil needs to make the rounds like that set of heads that was used for powder coating back in the day.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone. I have no problem with mailing this to someone as long as the next person is willing to send it along to the next guy who might want it. Heres the deal though. The stencil is two pieces, the center godhead part and then there is the posterboard that i cut it out of and that has a 16" diameter hole/circle cut in it, that gives you the outer ring and a decent spraymask area. That big part would be hard to mail without folding it up. So i will send just the center (godhead) if you can provide the posterboard with the 16" dia hole in it.
Heres how i did it, you may find another way to get cool results.
First, I simply painted the insulator with flat black spray paint. I think anything other than flat black would look "not right". Then using the posterboard with the hole in it and NOT the godhead stencil piece, I sprayed a dark grey circle on the insulator. Then I placed the godhead in the center of the circle and used a lighter grey, primer actually, to make the contrasting color. I just used paint I had laying around that made a good contrast on the flat black. I wanted to use a dark blue like the car, but it didn't show up on the flat black well. So do what you want to there. Doing what you need to do to get the stencil to lay flat or stick down on the surface will get you better edges.
So who wants it first? remember, you must be willing to send it on. One area of the stencil is thin and delicate, you will have to be careful with it.

Last week I did my hood insulator. In keeping with the overall silver / red / black theme this what I did.
My insulator was clean, or so I thought. After wiping it down with rubbing alcohol, I used a semi flat rattle can to paint the insulator with 2 coats.
I then tried red but it didn't show up too well. I had some filler primer so I used that for a base , then red then silver. Had to use push pins to hold the stencil flat but still had to go over botht the red and silver with a brush for some touch up.
Big THNAKS to Matt In Detroit :beer: for the stencil, who wants it next?

BTW... when you remove the insulator you will break some if not all of the retaining clips, so go to a FLAPS and look for Dorman Products – 45713 – GM & Universal – QTY 3 (need 12 to replace all the clips). These are actually bigger than the OEM Ford ones. IMHO they look better.

How cool!! Looks great!! matching color to the valve covers looks good. Yes the insulator is very pourus so "thin" paints wont cover well. You need to clear coat or prime the area under the stencil to get the paint to cover well. Even then you will need a few coats.
Great job FBM!

Thanks for posting pics. I decided to go with just to go with the Gods head and not the circle. Did it with the liner on the car. I would reccomend not doing this. If I were going to do it again, I would've taken it off but, was weary about the plastic clips and replacing them. Doing it that way, gravity kicks your butt, thus a lot of touch up sitting on the radiator in the engine compartment.

^^^ Babb's I actually did it the hard way. I cut and removed the entire section of the hood liner, trimmed the underside of the hood, then reformed it with fiberglass matt, and painted it to match. It took alot to do it but I have no hood rub and it's hardly noticable...

I painted mine, it had a stain from a cleaning agent by the previous owner. It painted real nice.

The stencil pass around is now officially DONE! The first one is lost somewhere in IL. The one I made is lost somewhere in Texas. The original intent was to let it float around to as many member's as possible. That can't happen if the people who recieve it decide it's in their best interest to keep it. No one benefits when you guy's act like this. 2 stencils and only 4 guy's have had access to them. :shake:
I'm definatelly not making another one!

After removing my hood liner, I cleaned it with alcohol on a rag first. Sprayed the liners with 2 can of flat black paint, The paint will stiffen the liner. I them used push pins to hold the stencil in place.

Good idea doing the spare tire cover.
You will need to spray some type of sealer on the spare tire cover first so the paint doesn't bleed.

Well there is no "again" - it hasn't been touched since 2003. Looks like I'll be flat blacking it soon.
I am intrigued by this appliqué. I started the process and got the background painted OK, used a brush-on enamel instead of a spray. That came out OK.
I went to Office depot and for $1.00 the lady enlarged a digital camera file of the God's head to 14 inches, in two halves (scotched taped them together).
From that James79stang and I cut out the stencil. So far so good. Got it applied and painted only to find we put the stencil on upside down.
Repainted the background and will reapply the stencil with enamel paint using a dauber instead of a brush to cut down on bleeding.
The colors I chose are Painters White for the background and a medium gray for the stencil portion.
Pictures tomorrow, I hope. phooey, didn't work out, I'll try again in the near future.

Do you guys not realize that the original material for these liners is inferior?
This is me: www.hoodliners.net (http://www.hoodliners.net) and I'm a member here. My link was mentioned a couple of pages or so ago. Please read through ALL the info there to see what I'm fabricating hoodliners from and take a look at the galleries and testimonials.
I can provide the head logo, MARAUDER lettering, the Mercury logo, plus any text you want - just let me know what font you need it in. Several decal colors are available. Take a look at the order page and see what the Marauder liners are selling for.
My liners are far superior to the stock insulation and any other carpeted/embroidered liners out there. Mine are made from aircraft firewall material that doesn't get dirty or reflect heat back towards your intake. You do have to remove the hood for installation using 3M #80 spray adhesive.
I've been trying to catch the attention of the Marauder owners for a while - the Corvette and Mustang guys are loving it, why not you guys? I don't own a Marauder but i do own a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC and the first thing I did was to remove the hood, ditch the factory liner and put mine on. After 3 years it still looks like the day I put it on.
I have a solution - let me prove it to you.
ADDED: This is the head logo with the MARAUDER lettering I cut from heat-resistant vinyl.

Hi Baconbit! I'd love to send you one of my liners! I've sent a few Marauder liners out, both with and without underhood light openings. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the completed installations to show, which is why there are no Maruaders pictured in the FLM gallery. Feel free to look at the other galleries too and see the end results of other car makes and models.
ADDED: Here's a 2000 Ford Crown Vic with my liner on it, with a red SVT logo.

No adverse affects to the paint job on the hood since it reflects away from the engine?
tbirddmnd
12-30-2011, 01:41 PM
None at all, the liner dissipates heat, it doesn't put it back to the engine or to the hood. Been at this since 2007 and no adverse affects on anything. If the liner ever gets dirty it can be wiped clean with a terry cloth towel sprayed with Windex or water.
On my 97 Ford Thunderbird Limited Edition I had a rear heater hose burst that sprayed hot coolant all over my aircraft firewall material hoodliner and vinyl decal (Thunderbird wings logo). After it cooled off it wiped CLEAN with that cloth and de-greaser.

Thanks fastblackmerc!
I have them on sale - scroll down to Lincoln-Mercury (2nd set of drop downs): http://hoodliners.blogspot.com/p/order-your-hoodliner-here_02.html
Liners come with your choice and color of decals, usually the Mercury Man (godhead) WITH the MARAUDER lettering underneath. I can also sell the decals by themselves as well, however they WILL NOT STICK to the original hoodliner insulation. It's been tried before and they just fall off. They adhere best to a smooth surface. Decals come loose, you decide exactly where to place them once the liner is on.
Someone asked me about trunk lid liners: there are no templates for the trunk lid liners, for those I would need to know what size you need, width x height. I'll send a section of material in those dimensions and you'll need to trim-to-fit using an X-Acto knife or a utility knife. Trunk liners are usually $50 and I can include a decal.
Don't forget to explore the other galleries there, as well as the FAQ page, and the "ABOUT MY HOODLINERS". Lots of info there. Yes it takes a little bit of work to install, but it's not hard and the end result is well worth the small effort. Most guys wrench on their cars anyway, hood removal and replacement to get the liner on is very minor compared with engine and tranny upgrades.
Thanks!!

Hi Mr. Man! This is from my FAQ page:
<< How does it attach? Can I just use the plastic push pins?
It's attached to the hood with 3M #80 spray adhesive. Using the plastic push pins alone is not recommended because the liner will sag in areas not held in by the tabs. The holes are punched on the liner and serve two purposes: 1) to ensure as you install the liner that you are installing the liner correctly. The holes line up with the holes in the underhood for the plastic pins indicating it's correctly aligned. 2) Once the liner is installed you can insert the plastic pins to complete the "stock look". The liner will "grab" the pins and they'll seat well. >>
Thanks and Happy New Year!
