View Full Version : Brake dragging?

Thankfully not on the MM but I believe on my 08 Taurus. The last fill up of gas I was not able able to get over 19 mpg, which is strange because since I've had the car I've been getting 20-21 mpg steadily. So the past 2-3 days I have noticed a lot of brake dust on the RR wheel, also when releasing the brake from a stop I hear a slight clink sound and have heard some squeaking also. I knew something was up after I had washed the car yesterday morning and made a 50-60 mile trip, the rest of the car was clean as could be including the other wheels but the RR wheel was covered in brake dust and the rotor was extremely hot where as the LR rotor I could actually touch.

Is this a usually sign of a brake dragging or caliper not fully releasing?

This will be the 4th time it will be going into the dealer since I bought it 2/27/10, I'm starting to get really :mad2:. I'm not going to take it back to the dealer I bought it at since they're a bit of a distance away and take it to the dealer who is within 10 miles of me since I have about 250 miles left on my CPO warranty which I have a weird gut feeling it would be wise to purchase an ESP before the CPO warranty is up.

Tell them to replace the caliper and the brake hose as well seeing it is a multiple trip problem to the dealer.

Well this is the first problem I've had with any brake related stuff. Had driver's heated seat pads replaced, condenser/trans cooler replaced, dye added to a few things to check for leaks and then this brake issues would be trip #4, going to get them to do the transmission calibration software update as well.

I don't remember if the Taurus uses the same mini drum ass'y for the parking brake as the MM or if it's integrated into the caliper like my T-bird, but either way, something's not releasing. Sometimes the hose collapses internally and allows the brake to apply, but doesn't allow pressure to release fully.

Good point, didn't think about that and I always set my parking brake because the car likes to roll/move just a tad which is something also the new transmission calibration software update would fix. I'm starting to wish I had kept my 05 Pontiac Grand Prix now....

Chances are if that one wheel is geting that hot the fluid is boiled a bit and the cut seal around the piston isn't too fond of that and tends to distort. And a lot of times the hose is that cause of the hang up in the first place.

You should be able to see pretty easily if it is a mechanicl/hydrolic caliper there will be an arm comming off of the back of it to operate the e-brake function. If there is no warm then it has the drum e-brake inside of the rotor.

The '08 Taurus has integrated parking brake in the caliper and if I remember correctly it screws back in the opposite direction.

Yep if it has that set up you have to press the piston in as you screw it back in as well.

I have the tool for doing that type of caliper.

But I havn't seen those cars to work on them yet so wasn't sure what it had.

Since this is a northern vehicle, see if the caliper slides are not siezed.
