Pulled out of my driveway and made it half way up the street going about 15mph and then heard a load bang thought I ran over a bottle or something. Stop the car and got out didnt see anything under neath the car or around it, so got back in the car put it in drive and car just idle's then put the car in reverse same thing all the while making a clanking noise. Also if the car is just in Park, you are able to push the car. The only way it wont move is if the E-brake is on. I have verified that when you do put the car in drive the driveshaft will turn. Can someone help me on what's wrong with it, is it the TRANSMISSION?.:confu sed::confused:

If the driveshaft is turning, that only leaves the rear end. Is there or was there any fluid leaking from the differential?

Broken rear end. Axle if you're lucky.

I concur with the others sounds like a rear end problem.

If its clanking, I don't think its the axle. I think your transmission is fine, the rear is where to look. Perhaps the bolts backed out of the ring or total failure.

No fluid leaking from the differential. If it is the driveshaft should I go with OEM or aftermarket one?

Sorry didn't mean driveshaft, I meant is it better to replace rear end with new or can I try to find a used one?
LeoVampire

you do not need fluid leaking on the diff to have a problem.
If the drive shaft is not sitting on the ground do not worry about it right now that is not your problem!
You need to have the rear end checked out and or repaired as nessasary.

You may or may not be buying someone elses problems with a used rear end.
Even if you go that route it would be better to have it opend up and inspected so might as well rebuild your own.

It will not stay still while in park and a clunking in the rear end.

Any rough ideal on what It's should cost to have the rear rebuilt?

Any rough ideal on what It's should cost to have the rear rebuilt?
(2) new dorman axles = $250 shipped. includes: seals and bearings both sides
(1) ring and pinon kit - $150-175
(1) trac-lok carrier assy with clutches - $300ish?
Labor = 400.00 easy.
Those are good prices. You may find them to be higher. you may not need everything...
Good luck.
p.s. It's a good time to upgrade to 3.73, 3.90 or 4.10 - you will need to purchase all of the above PLUS a tune to upgrade the gears +$400 for tune & tuner device.
Take the cover off and see what happened before you jump to any conclusion.

No offence adtaylor but Zack I do not think he is very mechanicly inclined so might be better off having a shop tow it in and see what is going on.

There was one on ebay for a CV, the auction ended about a week ago with no bids. It had a $199 opening bid, which would be a great deal. I tried to get a shipping quote but he never replied, so I didn't bid. I simply wanted it to use as a mockup to make a jig for a 9" so I didn't care about gear ratio but it was from a CVPI so it should have come with 3.55 gears like the MM. This should link to the item, you can contact the seller and see if he still has it.

PS, it was located in Indy, so it's not too much of a drive to go get it and save on shipping.

Thank you everyone for your input, I'm having the car towed to get looked at and if it's the rear end, then it will get rebuilt by a guy that comes highly recommended by the local mustang group.

I'm going to the shop tomorrow to look and inspect my car, the shop advise that the rear end does need to be rebuilt as well as the gear (4:10) is damaged. T.he shop did advise that it was very strange that the rear end gave out, even with the car being Supercharged. I was directed to Car craft web site http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ccrp_0711_how_to_install_new_r earend/install_gears.html to get a ideal on options and cost to rebuild it. My question is do I really need to purchase everything they have listed for parts which totals over $2K which I don't have to spend. I would like to go into the shop tomorrow knowing truly what needs to be replaced to rebuild the rear end and then what are upgrades that I maybe don't need, any guidence is appreciated.

2K????? I would think a ring, pinion, and a install kit should be enough unless you have damaged axles or destroyed the spiders. Even then, you'll still be a lot less then 2K.

That amount sounds pretty high to me and it depends on what is damaged or how far the damage extends as to what you need to replace.
Sounds like the labor far exceeds the price of the parts to me.

Looking at the parts list on there web site only roughly $200 is labor for ring and pinion the rest is parts.

UPDATE!
Here's the scoope on the car. The pinion shaft split in two right at the lockscrew, which I assume when that happen the lockscrew got caught in the gears which caused part of the teeth of the gear to chip. Here's the list of parts that were recommended by the shop. ( http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SharedWishListView?listId=7383 73&storeId=10001&catalogId=10002&langId=-1 ). I was advise I could also bring in my own parts to have put on. I just want for you guys to take a look at the parts list they suggested, to make sure this is the best route to go on a limited budget. Labor for the rebuild will be $400.00.

Just a thought... Did you have 4.10's installed or was the rear end still stock? If somebody put 4.10's in it, they screwed something up which allowed this damage to occur. Wouldn't be the first time it has happened, I've seen a few threads on here mentioning ring & pinion gear installs gone bad, wrecking a rear end.

How long should you wait before really putting the pedal to the floor, I have put almost 200 miles ( not going over 45mph) on her since getting her back last thursday. Open track night is tonight and I want to take her down the track for the very 1st time.

Some people claim that you have to go 500 miles to get a wear pattern on the ring and other say you can drive the car normally from day one.
I say you are fine to go to the track. If its setup right then you shouldnt have any issues.
There is no break in period for gears!
