View Full Version : Oil smell in cabin!?

Lately while driving around every time I come to a stop I smell engine oil inside the cabin. Then as I drive off the smell goes away just as fast as it started. Mainly if I have the A/C or heat on is when I smell it the most. Does this mean that my PCV valve is bad, or is it something else? The car doesn't use oil or leak so I can't figure it out. Oh and do our cars have cabin air filters? My 99 Silverado has one thats kinda under the glover box.

Do you have breathers? If not, it may be a minor oil leak somewhere. There is not a cabin air filter, so with the AC on it draws in outside air. If you put it on MAX AC it recirculates air so you shouldn't notice it as much.

+1 are you using breathers?

He is saying PCV so I am guess he has a stock marauder motor.

Yes I am running all stock right now. So I must have leak somewhere? What is prone to leak on the Ford motors? Sorry I have come from owning many Chevy's, this is my first Ford.

Have you done a visual check around the engine compartment and underneath?

Ya, it looks kinda dirty back behind the valve covers but I can't seem to find any wet oil.

If your PCV system is tight, unless you have a HUGE blow-by problem (which I assume you don't) you shouldn't have any oil smell in the cabin, so I would guess you have oil getting onto something very hot, like an exhaust manifold or pipe.

Thanks all I will go home tonight and check the best I can to find a leak.

there is a little air intake area in the cowel where the fresh air come's into the car.

I went to an aquarium store and bought the activated carbon pad's you can get for pond pumps and cut it to size and put it in there for controling the smells comming into the car.

Granted this dose not solve your problem of where the smell is starting from but might consider putting one in anyways for when your behind trucks and what not.

I also use these in the bathroom vent and the microwave hood vent for the stove cheap and easy to use and last for several months.

For $10.00 it is worth it. 19746

Could be that you are just sucking in the exhaust fumes from the car ahead of you. I have noticed this when snugging up a little too close behind some puff-wagons. It clears when you start sucking clear air.

I bet your brake master cylinder is leaking. I had this happen on a Grand Marquis. Take a flashlight and look at the bottom of your master cylinder close to the booster. If it's wet that's most likely your problem.

Is it by the air blower you put this?

[FONT="Comic Sans MS"]Even thew i switch to pcv the smell went a way, but i still do feel drozzy every now and than, i went to the muffler shop today and they told no muffler leak, I don't get it! window open or closed, i feel drowsy, warty eye, and headache, that happens if i drive it for 10 min, what might be the problem?, I want to know if they sell a device so i could track it? I just want to note carbon monoxide is orderless so is really hard to track unless they make a device i would like to buy it

Remove your wiper arms and then Take off the top of the cowel on the passenger side you will see a screend in vent that is the air intake for the cabin of the car. Cut and place the carbon filter over that screen area and then put the cowel top back on and then your arms and your done.

Seeing this lasts @ least 6 months from what I have found on my own Marauder it isn't that big a deal to do this and it seriously cuts out nasty smells from the outside world as long as you use the activated carbon filter pad.

Yes several long screws and a couple of clips plus the wiper arms.

The passenger side is the air intake vent above the AC heater core box area.

I never thought of taking a picture of it when I did it the last time sorry other wise I would show you what I mean.

You know that piece your looking for that you broke on both ends?

Remove that from the car and on the PASSENGER SIDE of the car you will see a screened in vent opening. That is the one you have to cover with the activated carbon filter pad to stop smells from comming in the cabin.

Did you buy the filter pad yet before you even take it apart again?

Very possibly that's the problem. Broken heater/air conditioner housing allowing air to get in from the engine compartment. Temporary fix could be done with duct tape.
