View Full Version : Clicking sound from rear end?

Tried searching for this to no avail. Recently, I've noticed an ocassional "clicking sound" coming from the rear of the car. I've tried to replicate it on demand (ie., tight turns, acceleration) but can't seem to find the cause? My first thought was a u joint...which it may be. The car only has 51k miles so that seems odd. It is not "posi chatter" as I know that one and the fluid was changed about 5k miles ago. Kind of stumped. Have not put it on a jack yet and tried things out but thought I'd get some thoughts from you guys.

Thanks

Zack

So is it catching and need adjustment or something more significant? Please elaborate.

Could be the rear pads bouncing around.
There is a retainer that holds the pads in place when you aren't braking.
If it is broken or missing, the pads will make sound
when you drive over a parking lot bump or any SMALL speed bump.

I agree with Zack.

I had the same occasional clicking sound with my Marauder. The friction material came off one of the little shoes for the parking brake and was floating around. I'm just glad it didn't catch and seize during my old commute (60mi each way).

Now taking the rear rotors off. . . That was a PITA.

I had the same thing...you probably need some limited slip friction modifier added to your rear end oil. Buy a small bottle and try that first.

At first i really got scared too i thought my rear end is gone, but It happened to me, and yes it is the parking brake, your could drive it while holding the parking brake half way u could hear the sound change try it, Keep the window down and drive under 5 mph and listen for noise to change while holding the E brake

Sounds like that's the fix! No means to barge in but I'm hearing a squeak from my WOT shifts! Any idea if I could possibly need a gear oil change? Before it only happened on my 2-3 shift but after my lidio tune it happens on my 1-2 shift as well. Just need a heads up in case it could get more serious?

Check your control arm bushings if the noise is in the rear.

Ya E-brake. My 04 at 78,000 the pads fell off the shoes and gave it more play or more room to move around, in turn making the little spring clips click as they moved. Changed the rear brakes and the E-brake shoes and sound went away. Oh and Oreilly auto parts said that my car didn't have an E-brake cause it wasn't in their computer, what the $%#* is that! I also had to pull the rear rotors off with a 6" claw puller cause they were stuck on good.

Would that be more along the lines of a serpentine belt slipping? I don't know just a thought.:)

Clicking sound- parking brake assembly.

Squeak on WOT shift- serpentine belt.

Thanks guys, as usual this forum is a gold mine. The over the speed bump example is dead on as I do hear the clicking then. Sounds like pulling the rotor will be fun, but atleast it is not a more serious issue.

It helps if you use a torch and heat up the rotor at the face where it contacts the axle. This will help the job a lot.

Don't skimp on the heating.

I just used a deadblow hammer and off it came after about 10 to 15 wacks.

Agreed, sounds like the parking brake. When I upgraded my brakes, the e-brake pads just fell out lol. They were like wafer thin.

Question:

Do I have to pull the axles off to get to the Parking Brake Pads?

I have same exact noise and dealer told me it was axle bearings. Wanted to charge me like 2k for parts and labor.... WTF I felt it was something to do with the rear brakes from the sounds of it. I do not have any leaking of the bearings and fluid in diff was changed last year. It was clean with no shavings from what I was told.

So if I have to pull axles, I'll do bearing since I am in there already otherwise I'll hold off if they can be changed with them in place.

Let me know,
Thanks,
Ron

No,

Just pull off the calipers and pads.
Take off the rotor and the parking brake assembly is underneath.
The center of the rotor is a small drum for the parking brake.

The center of the rotor is a small drum for the parking brake.

So there is enough room to get to the parking brake pad with axles and tone ring in place once I remove the rotor and caliper.

Cool thanks.

The linings on my parking brake shoes came off and were dancing around inside the parking brake drum. It was making the clicking sound that you described.
