:shake:. i know there cheap and look good but if ur not goona do your homework on it and just give 150 200 i gave 200 for a valintine on craigslist. get a valintine 1 if not a passport or escort. and another thing mounting a radar low on your dash is bad for reception if you cant get a visor clip that is an opiton with the valintine 1 its hard to see from outside the car best reception and does not bake in the sun then just mount it high. ps the best thing about the v1 is you can update it even 10 years from now when ever anything else come up new radar bands or whatever just send it to v1 for a small fee and you got a new radar

Cobras are not worth the powder to blow them up.
Once again, the Valentine 1 is NOT the best RD out there.

My whistler cost $80 brand new 8 YEARS AGO. It has saved my butt from hundreds of tickets. Infact, I have only had one ticket since, and that was because it was in my other car... Expensive does not allways mean the best. As with any detector, especially cheap, the biggest problem is false alarms. Yes, it does throw off more than i'd like, but better to be too sensitive than be not sensitive, it's all in the filtering.
I know you are reffering to Cobras, but I also figured you meant cheap.
BTW, It resides on my dash, never once been a problem.

I'm with you. Tuesday my family and I are leaving on a 5000 mile road trip. I have no radar detector, no GPS Device and no DVD player for the three boys. I plan on drivig at 75 the whole way. I figure I don't need a radar detector because if I am driving fast, it should be on a track and I should be paying attention to who is around. GPS, I have a map. DVD player, the kids can talk, read signs and learn about where we are going.

I have a GPS
I have a DVD
I have an iPod
I have Bluetooth
I drive over 85.
If you drive in south Florida and don't drive at least 80 on the highway you are a hazard.
At 85 it is best to have your GPS turn down your iPod and tell you where to go.

I haven't used it, I did read that it didn't work well in an application where is was used on in a magazine article test.
There are other ways to jam laser, since it is not FCC regulated, the sky is the limit.

Yeah, against the OLD radar detectors.
There are remote mount units from Escort and Bel (now pretty much the same company) that put the V1 to shame.
And jamming laser is not illegal unless the state specifically mentions them in the law. Laser is not governed by the FCC as stated earlier.

Please check the test results on the sites I posted before making claims that Cobras even work, much less are "the best bang for the buck."
I get it - you're defending the product you bought. I used to own a RMR detector until I learned otherwise.
To the RD enthusiast, Cobra RDs are like the Hyundais of the drag racing circuit.
Why am I so emphatic? If people hold companies accountable for performance and buy superior products, then companies like Cobra will have to improve their products to compete.
And as far as owning RDs, I don't even speed much. Why own one? Because you don't need to be speeding to get a ticket. Knowing where the cops are, especially on "Special Traffic Enforcement Day" (*always* when it is sunny and 70, *never* when it is 40 and raining...) keeps you from being one of the volunteer contributors to a broken system.
Traffic tickets are mostly about budget, not safety.

When I drove my Kenworth Cross country I never needed a Radar detector the CB was my best friend and other truckers. Smoky was the enemy and cost us money and time.
That was when getting some where fast and travling some miles accross the highways ment something so it was important to know where the traps were.
Now a days I don't find a need for doing that just wasting money in gas. I would rather risk going fast and losing the Marauder and or my life as well as others.
So keep the detectors and wave to smoky bear when he passes by me is my life today as I get a thumbs up back from them.

I use a Bel and an Escort, not because I am actively speeding. I use them not to get caught in a speed trap, and there are many.
I use a GPS as an aid to navigation, particularly at nite it tells me what the road is ahead and that enables anticipation which increases the safety factor.
Try driving at nite on secondary roads with no lighting in an area you have never driven before. Some of the areas I drive in have more water than land, running off the road means swiming.

He said you are trying to find a way to break the law without getting caught. He then said that if you are not faithfull in little things it can lead to bigger worse things. Learn to obey the law. Learn to honor the SPIRIT in why the laws were made. For me its a moral issue. I obey the law 99.9% of the time. I tried to teach this to my daughter and it went in one ear and out the other. every rd picks up false alerts. every rd is programd to pick up x k and ka band and laser. food stores use x and k bands. cars or trucks with led tall lights or adaptive cruise control or if your realy close to neon light will show on any radar as laser. now i dont know about other rd's but on the v1 you can turn x and k band off for x and k are the most false alerts. so you mean to tell me that your rd is so great that it can tell the differance between a food stoore and a cop car. when the v1 picks up a leaky rd it will show a j meaning junk radar. but i hade my v1 for 3 years and never got the j signal
duhtroll
06-06-2010, 09:55 AM
On the contrary. I don't speed much either. So why have a RD?
1) Because you don't have to be speeding to get a ticket. Knowing where cops are (if they have radar on) is helpful. I have received only one ticket in many years and it was not speed related. It was a bogus charge (when passing I apparently "touched" a double line...) that basically ended up being the officer's word against mine, so I lost in court. I knew he was there and was conscious of my driving at the time, because of my RD. Several other times I have been able to avoid slow downs of speed traps and other "revenue generators" because of my RD.
Anyone who thinks they won't stop you if you are not speeding or blatantly violating the law is being naive. It happens.
2) Knowing where slow moving tractors are on 2-lane highways so you don't come up over the hill at them while doing 40 MPH faster and have to slam on the brakes, is helpful.
3) Everyone has trips where they may or may not be using cruise control. The beep from the detector keeps one more conscious of their speed, and that is helpful.
So the insinuation that people with RDs are always out to break the law? I don't buy it. There are actually more people out there speeding without RDs, making them in essence much more dangerous drivers.
I couldn't agree with you more.

Yeah, some RDs CAN do exactly as you mention - filter out nearly every single false alert, and when those are found they can be eliminated permanently through programming -- not by removing entire bands, but by the RD remembering that individual signal.
Those are are what I mean by "good," compared to the V1.
Do some research.

well let me put this to you blunt. every rd picks up x k ka band and laser any radar is not going to tell the difference between a x or k band from a store or a cop. x and k band are allmost same. x or k band from stores will only pick up if your realy close. x or k band from cops can be shot down the road at a much more further distance. rd's have filtering modes meaning only picking up strong signals so if your on a filtering mode it will alert when the strenght indecator is allmost halfway. now when you say remembering the only thing a radar can do is the passport/escort can send a signal to a satellite telling the sat to send a signal to where you pick up a rd band so that every time you come to that same spot the sat will tell the rd what band rd was there. now how many times does a cop post at the same spot? so if you travel the same route 20mi every day in ten years your rd will never go off. so stop qizzing me about rd's ill im saying is that the v1 has faster further picking up of bands (theres lots of vids on youtube showing a v1 picking up rd from allmost 2mi away and thoes are the older ones but buy now are updated from v1 for 100 bucks dont have to give 500 bucks on a new rd every 5 years. and the arrows help alot when it picks up a false signal the arrows will go from front side then back very fast telling you its false

Hey duhtroll: peace!!! I am on your side!!! I am not insinuating anything. I say and I quote “for me it is a moral issue“. What it comes down to is personal preference. You choose to have one, I choose not to.
It can be used as you say for safety reasons, and can help one pay attention to ones speed and I agree whole heartedly with those reasons.
However I have been with people who dislike authority and if they think they can get away with things they will use the RD (misuse the RD) and try to skirt authority whenever possible and in the process blatantly break laws that are there for the protection of all.
Also you do not need a RD. to avoid speeding tickets Ask my dad. He has been driving since he was 16, he is now 74 years old and has never had a RD and never had a speeding ticket. I am sure there are a few in the MM.net community that can say the same. He has received other tickets for other violations but a RD would never had been useful for those violations. To each their own. I wish you many more years of trouble free motoring with your RD and I will continue on with out one. On this particular issue an arguement can be made just as passionatly either way. Peace bro.

OK, let's be blunt.
There really is a lot you don't know about radar.
It is tough even having a discussion because you are trying to convince someone who has done the work, the testing, and the research when it is obvious you don't know the difference between a band and a frequency. Each band has several - some are used for radar, some are not.
X and K band are most definitely not the same, either...
And, a filtering system doesn't just choose strong versus weak signals. Sigh.
AND you aren't supposed to filter out the actual police radar. You filter out the grocery store, bank system, etc.. Of course the radar I use doesn't even alert to those in the first place. But the V1 does. Don't even take my word for it. Look it up on rd.net.
"So just turn x and k band off in my V1." Yeah, if you happen to live in areas where x and k band radar aren't used - and yes they are still used.
I get it - you're a V1 zombie. Lots of those on the rd.net boards. Unfortunately the controlled testing shows there are better products available.
Youtube is not a controlled environment, but I am sure you can use that to verify just about anything you like, if you look hard enough. I am certain people who want to prove a point about a product they like (or don't like) would never manipulate the test...
Yeah, and if you're doing it right, you're spending more than $100. Using the argument "well, I only spent $100" is like a guy with a crown vic bashing a MM owner who has a Trilogy for spending the money to have something better.
Some things are worth the investment, especially if you enjoy it as a hobby like I do.
well let me put this to you blunt. every rd picks up x k ka band and laser any radar is not going to tell the difference between a x or k band from a store or a cop. x and k band are allmost same. x or k band from stores will only pick up if your realy close. x or k band from cops can be shot down the road at a much more further distance. rd's have filtering modes meaning only picking up strong signals so if your on a filtering mode it will alert when the strenght indecator is allmost halfway. now when you say remembering the only thing a radar can do is the passport/escort can send a signal to a satellite telling the sat to send a signal to where you pick up a rd band so that every time you come to that same spot the sat will tell the rd what band rd was there. now how many times does a cop post at the same spot? so if you travel the same route 20mi every day in ten years your rd will never go off. so stop qizzing me about rd's ill im saying is that the v1 has faster further picking up of bands (theres lots of vids on youtube showing a v1 picking up rd from allmost 2mi away and thoes are the older ones but buy now are updated from v1 for 100 bucks dont have to give 500 bucks on a new rd every 5 years. and the arrows help alot when it picks up a false signal the arrows will go from front side then back very fast telling you its false

With Escort you get three distinct signals X band witch most police agencies do not use, but some banks a nd drug stores do, the there is K band, than banks and grocery stores use and Police, the there is KA photo radar, and then there is Laser, the Police Officer has to be stopped to run Laser, you can Jam Laser it is very illegal to jam radar I like Escort it gives distinct indications of what you are being painted with, Escort also has GPS tracking to mark false signals, and where known speed traps are at.
