View Full Version : No power when cruising... sometimes.

I have had this problem for a while. I'll be driving down the road (speed doesn't matter) and when I keep the throttle in a steady spot it will die. The car will not die, but it almost feels like the spring tension goes away. The gas petal will feel like it's falling to the floor, I'll bring my foot down with it and by the time the gas decides to go back into the engine it will rev as if I gave it half throttle from nothing. The RPMs will drop down as to a point where the car almost dies. This usually happens when I am going 20 mph and up. It can happen when I am going 60mph too.

I just changed the plugs and the fuel filter was changed last spring. I doubt it's either, but I am not sure. I cannot get the car to do this on command, it will randomly do it. I have never changed the COPs. My old engine had them for 99K miles and never had an issue. I was thinking a tune might fix this, but it seems like another member has a similar problem, but not quite like mine. I have had this issue for a year or so and it hasn't gotten any worse.

It really does feel like the car is running outta fuel. I'll change the fuel filter and see what happens, but is there anything else to look for? Should I mention this when getting a tune and not change anything? Is there a common issue that leads to this?

:help:

Thanks!

Did you fix the bypass valve yet?

Is this another case of getting advice from Zack and not listening and posting the question on mm.net?:P

Hmmmmm.... let's see......

I have this oil leak under my car. I was told to fix it but I didn't.

I still see a puddle of oil under my car... what's causing it????

It really does feel like the car is running outta fuel. I'll change the fuel filter and see what happens, but is there anything else to look for? Dom, if you had a clogged fuel filter it wouldn't be intermittent as you're describing it. Also, you'd have issues at the top end or under load, not when you're just cruising along.

Possibly the fuel pump is intermittent?...or the power feed to it?

Dom, I hate to say it...but....I think it's time that you bought a Toyota Camry.

Get the "supercharged" floormats.

I thought that part only mattered when you let off the throttle, not when you're cruising. To answer your question, no. I can't figure this one out dispite the instructions. :(

Dom, I am at a loss for this, definately sounds fuel related.

Transmission is slipping. Send me $5.00 for answering your question.

Thank you. Don't make me fly to Chicago to break knees either!

You know what? That is a very good possibility, all jokes aside.

You should really consider a new car with a warranty Dom.

I hate new cars Zack. The style of beauty has been lost.

I'll play with the bypass valve in an hour.

Dom, See post 11... I was serious about that... not the $5, but the transmission...

All jokes aside!

Or in CBT's backside... whatever...

I was thinking somewhere in the drivetrain.

I do know about trannys... what? I don't get it...

Well the car is set to be dyno tuned next week. I'm sure it can be solved this way, but I am not sure. Either way I will change the fuel filter before Bob Kurgan sees the car.

And....if you really have a bad transmission you will find out about it on the dyno!!!

Better fix the bypass before your dyno session too!!

Dom, if you had a clogged fuel filter, it wouldn't be intermittent as you've described...or only happen while cruising. You'd run out of power at the top end, or under load, when the demand for fuel is the greatest.

Maybe the fuel pump is getting intermittent?...or the power feed to it? Go ahead and change the filter anyway as they're cheap, but use a GOOD one...like a Motorcraft or a NAPA Gold.

Clean your Maf. The intake manifold may need to be cleaned as well. Good Luck! This site is spending too much time on **** & not taking the site seriously as it should be . SHAME

Clean the IAC while you are at it as well. Get MAF cleaner at autozone or where ever and clean the MAF and the IAC. I did it and it helped greatly... Along with the FUEL FILTER!

Just a month ago the MAF was saturated in oil to the point of dripping out.

Dominick, you did clean the MAF again since the pipes got cleaned right? (Yeah right thats a no.)

hmmmmm....

If my MAF was soaked and I fixed the problem, the first thing I would do is clean any area that was affected for maximum performance and reliability
