I've been thinking about doing this myself over the summer, basically I want to put a pair of these right after the manifolds and then a pair of cats back in the exhaust chain right after those. Two things make me worry about them:

1. long-term reliability, I don't want them getting stuck
2. they are actually quite expensive to do when it comes to doing it right.

It will be loud and you're going to lose low end torque but gain some very top end hp.

A few years ago I goofed around and put on non-muffler side pipes on right off the H-pipe with stock manifolds and all 4 cats. They stayed on for about 3 weeks.

Only good reason to have them is to annoy people and use at the track, open up at the 1/8th mile mark and pick up a few mph and possibly knock some time off your ET's.

The key to loud.
Buy the Kooks Exhaust Kit
Install
Drive a whole bunch
After about 60K the mufflers start to break in. After about 150K miles, they are just about right. At 180K miles, they sound real cool. Ask me how I know.
