Last fall just before I parked the MM for the winter, the OD light started blinking and it wouldnt stay in OD at highway speeds. I knew this wouldnt be good but parked it under a tarp until the ice pack melted up here. I had it flushed and filter changed hoping it would come back to life but no joy in mudville. A local tranny shop quoted me $1200 for a complete rebuild but the money it REAL tight lately. I saw a low mile tranny on here just went for $699. (arghhhh)
So does anyone have one for sale or can I get some advice on a reasonable cost for the rebuild and is there anything special on the aftermarket side I should have added while its torn down? The car only has a chip and the CAI at this point but I do have a tendency to romp on it quite a bit.
Thanks!

It needs to be understood that the 03 and 04 transmissions are different. Zack posted a link to an transmission for an 04 as far as I remember. That will work great in an 04, but it won't work as a direct replacement in an 03 without addressing that difference in the transmission via tuning.

I also saw that there is another sensor on the side of the transmission on the 4r75w. I wonder if the corresponding harness would be needed.

Yeah I saw that post about the $2k tranny but it's outta my league for now. Dohc324ci is checking on a stock one up in norcal he heard about.
Aside from the J-mod, is there anything else that might be needed to beef it up partswise? The tranny shop here that wants 1200 for the rebuild mentioned an aftermarket ring of some sort that should be used for shifts above 5800rpm. My tune is set to shift at 6500 when you're on it.
The guy seems to know these tranny's as he does the ovehauls on the local PD crown vics but the advice I get from you folks is priceless.
Gratzi again

Good point. Should have read his post more closely.

Thanks for the info Darrin. I knew there were some internal differences between the '03 and '04 transmissions, but didn't realize there were compatability issues between the two.
Other than tuning, are they direct bolt-ups?

That is the snap ring for the intermediate one way clutch and that is a definite issue on a stock transmission that needs to be addressed.

Well, you do need the OSS sensor for the 4R75 because the ring gear will eat the one from the 4R70.
The other sensor on the side isn't needed and no need to change the wiring harness. Just use the correct rearward sensor, change the tune and all is good.

Thanks for the info!
HEY OP, do you make sure OD is off before you downshift from 4-2?
I dont want you to suffer the same fate with the new transmission.

Damn, my rebuild cost me $2200 with all OE parts a few weeks ago, I WISH I could have gotten away with $1200.

Yep yep there are times I have forgotten to kick off the overdrive before mashing it to smoke someone...so I will definitely be more careful with it now. I will be driving it to Chicago in July to get married to my sweetie so I'm hoping to meet up w you and Dom.
Anything other than the clip Darrin confirmed that you would do on the rebuild? Also is the stock convertor the way to go with a car that likely won't get a blower? I've been pondering NOS at some point down the road for that lil extra som som

Zack...I saw that post in the other tranny thread about doing the j-mod and a rebuild for $350. It may be more cost effective to fly you and the parts and tools (and Dom?) up to Fargo for a day or two. Even with beer and pizza and whatnot...
There is a nice lil dragstrip about 15 minutes away for serious road testing- not to mention sharing with me secrets of launching these sleds.
AND here's the kicker...you can cross Fargo off your bucket list of places you have to see yah dontcha know (yes they really talk like that up here)

I remember that deal! It would be nice having a rebuild by "The Man"

I dont rebuild transmissions, my buddy at Ford does.

Thanks anyways Zack...If I could limp the beast to Indiana I would...
ok...back to square one...anyone knowing the whereabouts of a good solid 03 tranny, please let me know.
Aside from that, is there a kit or a complete list of parts needed for the rebuild so I can go over this with the local guy that is looking for the $1200 to do it?
