View Full Version : Swapped out JLT with K&N

CBT

About an hour ago I switched out my JLT with my recently aquired K&N. A couple observations: The K&N has less moving parts, and you can throw it all on it one piece. Also, it has a billy bad ass support bracket pre-fabbed that comes with it. I did not have to make one. As far as looks, meh. The JLT has, to me, the upper hand. The K&N is all one piece, but it looks small compared to the giant tube of the JLT. Plus the JLT filter is longer. It's not as big around, though. (<---freebie for tj :D) So for looks alone, I like the JLT. I have not cranked the car yet, but I have a road trip tomorrow, 4 hours each way, so I will post back on the results. My booty is my dyno, and trust me when I say it is a sensitive piece of diagnosticalogical equipment.
Groan.
Boom.

Did the same thing a few months ago. Swapped the JLT that GoMifuni put in with the K&N CAI from my old 03 and IMO I prefer the K & N. I'm curious how you make out with the same swap.

Got to disagree there buckeroo. The K&N looks much more refined. Performance wise I think their are pretty even.

Nope. It works great and when you nail the far right pedal, it sounds like someone is trying to drive shave an angry gorilla in a phone booth. MEAN.
But I have gotten tired of the debate on which is better so I will answer it for myself. Cost is not an issue since I paid just about the same for both.

Where did you get the K&N? Cheapest K&N I've found is $243. Cheapest JLT is $159.

So, CBT, what's the verdict ... JTL or K&N? Inquiring minds need to know the results of your road test.

I just ordered another filter for my K&N. I know they just need cleaning, but I figured if I have two I can swap them out in between recharges. Can't wait to get my filter in. I am SURE my performance will increase DRAMATICALLY! My old filter is filthy

tjmorin82,
That was my plan also. However, for some reason, I can't seem to get the K&N filter off without taking the entire Mass Airflow tube. I loosed the clamps but its on there real tight. So I just decided to stay with the one filter and clean it with the Mass Airflow tube on it. I take the sensor off (obviously) and clean the sensor with the spray cleaner form Autozone while I'm at it before I put it all back on the car.

Really doesn't take that long to take it off. From start to finish it will take me 10 minutes tops. I like tinkering so I don't mind going through the effort to do it that way.

I will post up probably tomorrow, havn't had a chance to do many redlight/greenlight launches with just me in the car.

Just to make a note, the same cleaner spray and oil that is used on K&N filters can be used on the SB stack filter that comes with the JLT intake. Having two filters is a great idea especially if your car is daily driven. Also whenever you clean the air filter it is a good idea to clean your MAFS. Just remember LITE on the oil being sprayed onto the OUTSIDE only of the filter.

Well I believe my comparison of the K&N and the JLT are complete. A couple things I noticed:
The JLT is louder at launch and at speeds up to around 60-65. Goosing the throttle or flooring it between those speeds, you know you are not running a stock air box. And so does anyone around you.
The K&N really shines at 60-65 and above. That's about the speed I think about putting it in overdrive. Each time I would get up to that range I had to keep looking at the RPM's because it sounded like the engine was screaming, but it was fine. The K&N also seemed to respond quicker when nailing the pedal. Slightly, but I know my car, there was a difference. It just doesn't sound as 'mean' as the JLT.
As far as launching at a light, couldn't not tell a difference other than the JLT is louder. My tires still go roundy round a few times and the fantail starts to drift to starboard despite going to a slightly taller back tire in hopes of stopping it. Yeah squealing tires is cool but it means you are not moving forward. (It's science, don't ask)
My trip was 4 hours and 1 minute each way according to mapquest. Well let's just say I made mapquest my biatch and it did not take ANYwhere near 4 hours to get there. It was about 3 hours getting back because I don't tend to run 90 in the dark when deer are everywhere.
On the way there a sharp grey with black racing stripes Challenger was trying like hell to weave thru traffic and get to me, the closest he got was beside me. I was left lane doing around 80 and he finally broke around and got to Amy's door, I offed the O/D and double tapped the throttle and all you heard was a WOOT WOOOOOT and we were off like a shot. He fell back, but the K&N was suprisinglyloud enough that Amy started laughing, she said "You should have seen his face when you pumped the pedal like that!"
On the way back I stiopped for gas in what I believed to be Tijuana, Mexico even though the signs said Manassas, VA. There was a guy at the pump behind me washing his windshield and yelling in Spanish of some sort, the car across from me to my right there was two guys arguing in Spanish of some sort, and on the other side of my pump, he wasn't yelling anything, but he had all four doors to his car open and was, I swear to God, spraying Raid all along the door sills and edges and door jambs. I don't know what kind of bug problem he had, but he went around the car twice. So if you are looking to buy a used, crappy, 4 door white Neon with faded paint and blue pinstriping, PASS. It probably has La Cookarachas.
So anyway, I put 25 bucks in the tank on the way there and 25 on the way back. I figure my MPG average was, oooooh let's see, I DON'T CARE ABOUT GAS MILAGE AND I NEVER WILL.
In summary, I'd say it's a toss up, one sounds better than the other depending on your speed. I sold something to a "member" here and while he was tellling me about how much he liked men, I offered to sell the JLT and just put it in the same box, and save on mailing costs. Not because I think the K&N is better, it just happened to be on there and I really didn't feel like swapping them out again or keeping the other for a spare.

I enjoy the K&N roar... K&N was bolt on whereas I heard some negatives about the JLT so I went the K&N Route and am truly happy with it. My mom just texted me to let me know that I have a new filter for mine waiting at the house that arrived in the mail today. That way I can clean one while the other is on, then take the other off and replace with a clean one. Totally forgot it was coming today and I can wait to see what a difference it will make because my old filter is filthy!

Yep good ol DR told me its the best cold air intake for these cars. So of course I bought it. And then it comes in the mail with just a cone and air box no tube. If I knew that was the case I would have bought the jlt in the first place.

it wont be heavy, a couple pounds. well the way im running it 3-5 pounds wont be nothing compared to the amount of air ill be sucking in.

CBT - As someone else who has tried both the K&N and JLT intakes, I'd have to agree with your findings. Actually, I think you hit the nail on the head. The JLT screams like a banshee on the rag; however, the K&N not only looks/fits better, there was a 'noticeable' difference in favor of the K&N.

Also after some extensive/expensive testing, by the tank, I got quantitatively better gas mileage with the K&N. Even with some light romping here and there.

Anyone want to buy a JLT? I'll even properly clean the filter before shipping.
