Took the MM in for a 110,000 check---2 complaints
1---fluid leak , left front of car--looked like brake fluid
2---A/c made loud burping noise on first start-up

This is what we found---the fluid was engine oil--leaking from the oil sending unit--now the wierd part--when they went to the parts dept--there was no listing for a Marauder unit--discontinued ???????? Then they started looking for aftermarket--found one listed by "Autometer--part #2242--100psi"--but, the only one in stock was in MEMPHIS--$ 45 overnite fee. Now the Question is--was the one in my car stock or aftermarket??? Had DR real oil guage installed--did this involve a sender change ???:confused:

2--The senior A/C tech--a great tech, told me that the burping was caused by air trapped in the accumulator when my compressor was changed--it is almost impossible to bleed it out--soooo, if your freon has been changed, this burp can occur and is harmless--just irritating.

Changed oil and filter, PCV valve --the 110,000 check was complete !!!- preventative maintainence is very effective--MMs run forever Maury:beer:

Usualy when you buy an oil guage from Autometer it comes with a sending unit yes and it needs to be changed when a normal oil guage is installed other than our on off stock one's.

Have you tried removing the sender, cleaning up the threads with a wire brush and then reinstall using new pipe dope?

Maury, Do you think the "burping" sound that the A/C tech diagnosed is the same issue that Derek described in his post?

Yeah, the autometer has it's own sending unit, as far as the A/C goes they should have vacumed the system down after the compressor install. It's standard practice to install a new drier and do a vacum after installing a new compressor.

If the oil sending unit is big & shaped like a can then yes it's an after market unit. If it's small then it's a factory unit.

Does your oil pressure gauge rise and fall with engine RPMs? If so you have an aftermarket unit. If it reads about 60lbs no matter what , you have the factory setup.

Yes, if you had a real gauge installed, the sender was changed. The stock one is not a true sender but an on-off switch that closes with ~6 lbs of oil pressure.

As massacre suggested, just have them remove the sender and re-seal the threads with either thread sealant or Teflon tape.

the autometer senders are crimped together, so its very likely the case is leaking.

I don't know if this helps, but I took this picture for a fellow member who was looking to swap out for a real oil pressure gauge.

You can see that the oil pressure sending unit is attached to the manifold below the oil filter. There is also a pipe plug on the end of the manifold that may have leak potential as well.

Mine was leaking from the oil filter seal, a $10 part and $400 labor.

Yep, I would think it is the same thing--just have them check the pressure in case you have a leak

45 for a sender?

Wow !!!! Think I'll be visiting the dealer on Monday--here's copy of the work order:

Vehicle leaking possible brake fluid from driver's side of vehicle brakes feel soft.
Cause: Maint
10diag 1.0 misc diagnosis $109.95 (this amount circled???? not included in final amount)
Tech Ident
1 Autometer2242 sender 89.95
Parts: 89.95 Labor 99.95 99.95
Total 189.90

109961 maint cp 1.00 test drove with no abnormal brake concerns observed. inspected & found no concerns. fr & rear pads t7-8mm.replaced the aftermarket oil sender unit that was leaking oil, cleaned area

Now for the weird part---when the service rep looked at the car, before he wrote the order--found the OIL leak and thought it was a loose filter, kept the car overnite for A/C problem--called the next morning and told me that the oil sender unit was leaking and the unit was exclusive for the MM and no part # could be found. He called again and said they finally found an aftermarket unit for the MM--it would run $ 189 installed--then he dropped the other shoe--I would have to keep the rental car another nite and it would cost $45 to have the part shipped overnite from Memphis. I said the leak wasn't bad, just put the old one back on and I'd pick up the car and see what I could find out on the net--he told me it wouldn't be safe and he should keep the car--I couldn't be without a car and agreed. Picked up the car next afternoon. The service writer wrote off the $ 105 charge on the brakes after I questioned it. Then he helped me out by absorbing the UPS charges:(--so I paid $ 189.90 + $ 29.00 for the extra nite on the car for a $25 part I could have changed myself. It's h--l to be an old geezer :D. I'll let you know what happens when I show him the Summit Autometer ad--thanks everyone for the great responses--MM.net forever Maury
