View Full Version : Which Power Adder should i get?

Its come to the point where there's nothing for me to do(HP wise) to the MM except add a super/turbo charger or whatever. Im not looking for the cheapest way to add one but the more money efficient way, if you catch my drift. Im a college student :D. So my question is, whats the best route to go? i see a hand full of people went with the eaton setup but idk if that the best route for me. I know its a lot but if i could get a total price for each setup, including parts that would be great.
Thanks

Honestly, you can get a price quote from any vendor selling kits. and I suggest you do that instead of relying on others. Go to the sources. You also need to ask yourself what are you looking to get out of the power adder? Top end power? Low end power? Drag racer? Maximum hp and tq with a stock engine? Can you do the install yourself as a way to be more "money efficient"?
You've been around long enough to know this is a heated topic. You've posted in a subforum dedicated to the topic. Spend some time searching and researching and come to your own conclusion.
Everyone has an opinion and in the end, you need to make the informed decision. Don't expect to be handed THE Answer.

The Eaton swap is around $3000 Vs. The Trilogy which fluctuates but I believe its $5700 or like $6100 last time I got quoted and scared away!!!!
I'm not 100% it's been a while but the vortech kit is around $4500 starting as well...

To better explain my situation, I'm a car guy minus the technical skills to do any major modifications. I'm not looking for an answer, just opinions and past experiences. Obviously, i know i can check out a vendors site to check prices. i see what your saying but thats too in depth for what im looking for right now, I just want an idea for how much money it will be.

Thanks, the Eaton swap sounds like a good price. Did you get all of your parts from the MD area? I saw your post & pics, i would love to see your setup in person

Well the car was already modded(check the sig) by zack when i got it, so its ready for some sort of charger to be added. I just got back from NC saturday, so i plan on making a trip up there to see you

Do you just want more speed or are you taking the car to the track?

More speed, the track isn't really my thing yet.

Tracking your car is a good way to gauge performance.
When you say more speed what are you looking for? Quicker take off, more midrange power or high speed runs.

I got the parts wherever I could find them..I was mainly on SVTPerformance site.. Lucked out and found a guy selling a blower local from craigslist.. The parts arent hard to find.. Even after I got most of my parts, I was still looking and saw tons of parts and guys selling the eaton setups...

i would agree, you asked tho :D. Im not saying i would never go to the track

Can i get quicker take off's & midrange power? i rarely go over 100+
The Trilogy or Eaton will help you on those two counts. DRs Novi package will do a lot for you also but will not be quite as good on the launch at the lights. It will still make your grin big time! The price is not bad on the Novi kit. Give him a call and talk to him about it. I am sure you have a member around you who could help with the install of any of them. The Eaton is the cheapest way but requires more mechanical knowledge than any of the other kits. Good luck on your choice as I know it is a tough one!:)

+2........ Somthing else to consider is god forbid what happens if you have issues during/post install...... What kind of resources do you have at your disposal......
Who can you call to help with replacement parts install Q's/tips, and the like?
I have Jerry Barnes from Trilogy on my speed dial..... Have never needed to call him for anything other than to tell him what a blast the car is and talk smack, but its nice to know I can (I bought the car with the Trilogy already installed, but he talks to me like I was the one who purchased the kit and installed it). Peace of mind has to be worth a few bucks in my book.
Like Bunny says ...Do your research... Don't expect others to do it for you. Like Nate says, go for rides as the first part of that research...... I recently drove a DR setup and came away pretty impressed, but there are differences that are distinguishable. Nobody can make that decision but you.
Good luck with your project:beer:

Given your statement on your mechanical ability you should take a trip to either DR in N.Florida for a Vortec or Lidio in IL for a Trilogy. They all require some type of fabbing and modification, plus then you can get a cooling mod put in at the same time.
Good Luck on your decision

The Air to Air has no heat exchanger, intercooler pump, reservoir and associated plumbing. Several have blown engines due to intercooler pump failure. Some Vortec's cannot be operated below 25*, however they have a number of different Vortec models, just check to make sure that is not an issue.
When the Trilogy was being developed the 4:10s were installed for a lower ET at the drag strip by Trilogy.
For two years the lowest 60' time was a Vortec Centrifugal. Whats on a Dyno and whats real world are not the same
Vortec vs Trilogy Real World Data!
One MM was Vortec and one MM was Eaton. Both had same gears and tires. Vortec 10psi and Eaton 12.5psi. Vortec 3,500 PI. Vortec had 55,000 miles and Eaton 15,000.
I line up next to a beautiful red MM. This is the first MM I have ever lined up against. I get in the zone.
My r/t is .091 to his .144, ahead by .053, yahoo! Then I open up, my 60’ is 1.867 to his 2.151, ahead by .284. I feel the S/C winding up, my 330’ is 5.385 to his 5.681, ahead by .296. I know he is got to be there but I don’t know where. Then the 1/8 is 8.285 to his 8.590 ahead by .305.
I know that red beauty is charging on me, my 1,000’ is 10.832 to his 11.130, he closed to .298! Fortunately the ¼ comes up and my ET is 12.985 @104.72 to his 13.290 @104.31.
Wow, I crossed first by .3580!
Timeslipe data from a Vortec and Trilogy. Same gears, tires, exhaust, TC, Eaton 12.5psi and Vortec 10psi. Can you pick which is which?
1.704 5.089 7.942 85.53 10.438 12.554 106.67
1.741 5.096 7.924 86.4 10.399 12.501 107.33
1.702 5.046 7.886 85.7 10.383 12.511 105.89
1.691 5.025 7.852 86.34 10.328 12.426 107.56
1.745 5.096 7.883 87.13 10.329 12.391 109.4
1.748 5.114 7.907 86.9 10.358 12.427 109.03
1.72 5.047 7.822 88.15 10.272 12.333 109.52
1.716 5.019 7.79 87.37 10.237 12.3 109.38
1.744 5.098 7.894 86.79 10.355 12.431 108.69
1.69 5.221 8.051 86.58 10.514 12.921 108.65
Stock Trilogy 388RWHP/369RWTQ
Stock + the Trilogy and + the Vortec both ran 12.9-13.3 depending on temps. As far as the Trilogy providing more low end Torque the 60' times show no descernable difference.
Can you tell which is which? The kits are so close in any given race it will come down to the driver every time.

Have a stock torque converter? Upgrading to an aftermarket could help a lot also since you already have 4.10 gears.
