I've had this for a while and am not sure if it's been posted or linked before, but, it's good info to bring back up. It's from standard abrasives, but, their website wasn't behaving...

If you don't know how to properly port I'd refer you to a pro. DIY could be ineffective at least and disastrous at worst.

I would like to contradict that by just saying: If you are mechanically inclined, can afford to make mistakes, are willing to put in the time, enjoy putting a piece of yourself into your work... Do it. There's different levels to it too. Just know your limitations and what your goal is. I'm opening up the inlets to port match my NAZ PSRI and the exhaust to match the headers, clean it up in general for any obvious casting defects/extra metal, etc. I'm not going as far as the bowls, etc. It's easy! I've done light port work before.

Check out the current MM&FF they have an in depth article on head porting, it was a very informative read.

... can afford to make mistakes...
Wrecking a DOHC head would be a lot more than I can afford.
Light port matching to gaskets is all I would attempt. Anything more leave it to the pros. For a full port job all 8 cylinders need to match, just seems too risky for me.

I suppose confidence does go up when one has four heads! :D AND NO CBT, that's NOT what she said! :banana2:

A little deburring and some polish work is one thing. Getting into the head to increase air flow is not really beginner work. I would suggest if you want to learn get with a good port guy and have him show you the basics and practice on some junk heads before taking on your good sets.:)

Go Blue to match the valve covers!

Standard Abrasives sends out a printed version of that PDF with their DIY head port kit. I used their kit to port match and polish the exhaust ports on my old FE block. Can't say how well it worked yet, engine is still on a stand.

Blue it is! ;) So far, using a stencil to match the diameter I want to match for intake and exhaust ports, it's working great. Very work intensive and I need a bigger compressor engine or holding tank. It can't keep up with my die grinder. Time for a craigslist run again! I'll take pics as it progresses...
P.S. These burs and the polishing kit work great!
