I say they're wrong, I've never been asked cylinder position when buying coils, OEM or aftermarket.
Yes, I ran across that anomaly when I bought my COPS. Can't remember exactly what the reason was but it's OK to use the same part on all cylinders, OEM or aftermarket.

ok here is what I found out, napa, carquest. o riellys are all wrong!!! The coil they all show for cyl 1 and 2 is for the 2 valve as it has the bolt down tab where as the other cyl are correct for a DOHC. One store I even had a guy argue with me! well just so happened that i was willing to show him as my car was just outside oh no I cant he said I am busy now! yet no one in the store except me ha ha man those counter guys are idiots it seems like about 90 percent probably could not even spell car let alone look up parts for one. OK now sorry RANT over!

I recently put in a set of Accel's from JEG's and they were all the same part #.

there are two types of coils either will work in either engine 2v or 4v just have to cut the tab off the two valve coils so they will sit under the coil covers.

Most of the counter guys are just aren't into cars. To them, they are just working retail. Not any different that working in a grocery store or Wal-Mart. There's an excellent NAPA close to my parents' house where the main people behind the counter know cars and work on their own cars, but that is a rarity.
I had broken a water pump bolt in the block on my Bronco and when I finally got to the point of deciding to drill it out (even welded a nut to the protruding section of the bolt and it broke closer to the block) I decided to get some left-handed drill bits to see if it would grab and unthread it. When I called the Autozone to check to see if there were any in stock, the kid who answered the phone said that they had them, right next to the blinker fluid, I was pissed. :mad2: I told the guy that they are just a drill bit with the helix in the opposite direction so you spin the drill in reverse to cut. He then sheepishly said that he knew I wasn't making it up because I used the word 'helix'.:shake:

I can understand that maybe they the counter people are not car guys fine no issue there, what ticks me off though is when you look behind the counter you see all these certificates for training etc some of those certs are from ASE as well. so explain to me why if they all have this wonderful training that I never received that I know more then them. Heck I had a counter guy the other day till me to use brake cailiper slide grease for the back side of my front disk pads that stuff is GREASE I told him I needed the brake quite glue stuff he said that stuff is all the same, HMMM funny I as how I read the ingredient list and wow guess what grease and glue are differant but shhh dont tell anyone. I know I am ranting again but really why should I have to wait in line when I might be in a bit of a hurry mind you for some counter guy argueing what to put on my own car! Look its my car if I tell you I want to glue something then fine sell me glue its my car not yours! What ever the training is they get it needs work a lot of work. Just my 2 cents oh also I have worked behind the counter before at a parts store so please dont tell me that I dont know. I was fully trained on the computer system as well as even being shown how to lookup parts in this paper thing with pictures and stuff I think it is called a product catalog it covers what the computer doesn't. Try asking some of they counter guys to look a part up in one of those good luck most guys dont even know where the catalogs are. Ever store has catalogs to back up the computer. Kinda would like to see what would happen if the power went out if the parts store would even be able to stay open since they cant use the computer. Oh well just a sign of what the world is coming to I guess.
