View Full Version : I'm wondering...

I'm wondering about y'all who have the "space saver" spare tire, and have a front brake upgrade installed, like maybe the BaerClaw kit, or, 14" rotors.

Does that "space saver" spare tire still fit?

Can't really tell Mac, since I have not yet needed to pull it out as of this time. I have already assumed that it doesn't fit, seeing as the P-Zero is a different size tire then the stock tires on the car. If I ever receive a flat its "Hello AAA I need a flatbed at this location". Hopefully Chris or I will never need to make that phone call.

Yeah, I hear ya Gordon, it's AAA for me too. But, now that many here are looking at a lot of different upgrades, and some newly available, I can't help wondering if our "space saver" spare works anymore.

If one who owns a full size spare gets any brake upgrade, I would expect the spare to fit. I do not expect that when the spare is a "space saver." I do not know why, but I do.

Just a thought, eh? Seems a small camp anyway, thanks for your time.

That's a good wonder, Mac.

I knew the stock brakes were not up to par and planned on dealing with that in '04. Now that I've driven a few with upgraded brakes, the stock ones feel even worse.

I don't know the answer to your question but eyeballing it tells me no. Since the "space saver" pretty much has the same foot print as the full size in my trunk, I think I'll try to get a full size if a reasonable opportunity presents itself.

Don't forget for 3 years, 36,000 miles you can also call Lincoln Mercury's roadside number!:)

The Baer calipers have a 1/16 clearance on the front wheels. I wouldn't try to put a doughnut spare on that...in fact, I'd say you can't. But...I have an "A" with a full spare.

The "temporary" spare of the 300Bs is an 18" rim. It is narrow and a small tire but really isn't a "space saver" spare in the traditional sense of being a smaller wimpy wheel rim.
It might just fit.

Bigdog can you say "Modified, Void Warranity". Sure I knew you could, seeing as I have P-Zero tires on my car.
;)
Now is the full size spare for the front or rear  or does it matter. Maybe have a spare tire for the front and back, just in case. :help:

I've always been of the opinion "Why bother with a spare at all?" You don't carry a spare fuel system, or wiring harness, or spare lights, all of which seem to fail more often than tires. Mine is still in the trunk, but I can't seem to remove it. The hold-down nut is factory striped or something. Anyway, think about the last roadside repairs you've made. How often is it something other than a tire?

Sure, the Marauder would look good with a Continental kit

Hmm, Mac. If the skinny spare wheel does fit your front, maybe a pair with new skinny tires installed for the front would be a good compliment for your racing slicks on back at the track?

Okay, we're kind of drifting here, but having fun that I don't mind having.

OTOH, I would hate to see a 300B, or, '04 owner spend 1200 bucks on a front brake upgrade, only to discover (the hard way) that his spare (space saving or not, K?) tire isn't a that anymore.

It was a thought I wondered about, thanks y'all for exploring it with me.

and it was a good thought too Mac.

now, if it does fit your brake upgrade, how about those as skinny drag wheels?

I have the same car as you with the doughnut spare. Now that you posed the problem that I didn't think of, consider the following solution. I would put the spare on a rear wheel and replace the front wheel with the rear wheel. Is that okay?
