Today Alex, Phil and myself pulled the motor on Marauder #2 that we recently puchased with a bad motor. after we pulled the motor removed the
oil pan we found the problem it is a bad bearing. See pics below of the pulling process.

Yeah, i'd say that bearing is toast! So what's the long term plans for the motor and car?

Did that move under power when you bought it? I have THE SERVICE MANUAL from Ford at your disposal if you need it for anything. That's a GREAT project. Keep the pics coming!

It was running but it sounded like someone was hitting the block with a hammer.

Could be a good time for a forged crank and a few other goodies. Can't wait to see you progress.

90K miles on that motor used as a DD it shouldn't have done that.
I wonder what kind of oil, maintenance intervals etc.
Was it dirty inside? I see the brown stains but not sludge.
Or is that Cosmoline?

The bottom of the oil pan was full of sludge metal dust mixed with oil, other than that no coolant mixed with it should be just a lower end rebuild on a budget.

Are you gonna turn the crank and drop in standard bearings and not even take the heads off? Might not be a bad idea to look at the cam journals too.

Way to go guys, it's nice to see a MM being pulled back out of the hands of the Grim Reaper.

More than likely the big end of that rod is egg shaped . The piston might have been hammering the head after it spun a bearing.

A quick look in that cylinder with a borescope will tell.

Now is your chance to do a Cast Iron Short block
and have the heads rebuilt and honed...

Or you can go all out and built up on a Ford Aluminator !!!!!

I was kinda thinking the same thing myself. Dave and I are looking to yank it apart tomorrow and see what the damage is. I have a feeling the crank will need to be turned and maybe new/used factory rods will be needed.

Going to do compression test just to make sure all the cylinders are good before we decide if we want/need to pull the heads. Hopefully it will just be replacing bearings with everything still in the engine.

Before installing the crank, did you make sure there was no metal in the oiling passages?

New or turned, it is the installers responsibility to clean it, not the machine shop.
Just sayin, Ive been burned by this very detail before.

The Crank was like new from Navchaps car picked it up from Brian RoyLPita
We sprayed them all with brake clean and then used assembly lube

How hard is it to replace the cam guide wear tentioners ?

djv5150
07-12-2010, 06:20 AM
Its not to bad you have to lock down the head cams so they do not move when the tension is released, mark the chains remove and reinstall new ones you must be very careful to reintsall them whem all is at top dead center.

If one were to JUST install new guides can you leave the chains on? I assume yes but want to make sure. You guys make that job look way easier than it is.

Also what of that bracket you put the chains on the front - above the water pump. Where did you get that?

NICE JOB!

The bracket is home made lift point for pulling the engine from the lower alternator mount, It is no easy task to replace the guides and tenstioners you must pay attention to detail if not the timeing will be off. you must rotate the crank to top dead center lock down the cams on the heads. you will need a ford repair manual to do this

You used vice grips to lock heads/cams in place?

djv5150

You used vice grips to lock heads/cams in place?

The vise grip worked to keep them from further rotating after the chains were removed, you could try the vise grips because you are not removing the chains, but mine did move and we had to line up the cams to the proper timeing marks with the crank.

Must have been great hearing the engine running again for the first time after all the work considering what it sounded like before you took it out in the first place.
