Yesterday, just got done applying the two coats of Astroshield, what a product, too bad they quit making it, just about two more coats left in the can. :depress: I was wondering what the appropriate polishing product that members use for the stock wheels (rims), mine look a little hazy..........

The stock rims are clear coated. DO NOT use anything on them you would'nt put on the paint. Never use chrome or aluminum polish on these wheels.

Thanks, I thought I remember reading on the forums somewhere that these were clear coated.

I used my Porter Cable 7424 with Menzerna Intensive Polish and followed with Menzerna Final Polish. Then a coat of Zaino All In One. Then I put them back on the car and with each of the next 19 coats of Zaino Z2 or Z5 that went on the MM they got that too.
They look chrome now!

Ok well, might sound like a moron but what if I or the original owner placed Chrome Polish or Aluminum Polish on the rims?

Does it completely ruin them or can I fix them? I/he is an idiot I know. :)

What will happen is the polish will remove the clear coat which is what keeps the rims chrome looking. Once the clear coat is gone the rims will start to turn white and oxidize like untreated aluminum rims. This means you'll be polishing quite more often.

I stripped mine over the winter, when they are polished up they shine alot more then when they had clear coat on them. you just have to make sure when you go to the car wash you dry them with a towel. and every 2 months I need to re polish them. about 5 min per rim.

I'll probably be using the aluminum polish at some point. My clear coat on the wheels is peeling. I guess to look on the bright side, the clear coat on the wheels matches the crappy June 02 build paint.

buy the spray on ALUMINUM paint stripper, then polish them to a super high gloss.

i been told clear powdercoating works the best. but you will loose some shine. you live in Cali I bet your roads are pretty clean, if you just strip the clear use mothers aluminum wheel polish and a rag and with your 2 fingers rub the polish till it turns black then wipe off, you will probably have to polish them 2 or 3 times a year.
