:mad2: Can you remove the heads without pulling the engine?

Technically, yes. You need to pull the fan shroud, oil pan, ehaust headers, timing cover and balancer, primary chains then heads...
Whatdja do???

What did you do? You were doing the header's and cooling mod last we talked. What happened?

well from the top....i pulled the left side valve cover to trace a noise a couple weeks back and then i figured while i was in there i'd pull the intakes and do the cooling mod.
WELL somthing must have dropped into the head with the intakes off. ( i did cover each port) it was soo damn dirty in there it was almost impossible to keep from something falling in.
anyways i put it all back together today and fired it up and its tapping/knocking like crazy. i grabbed my stethescope and it sounds like the valves are slamming some crud in there. its friggin scarey loud.
its got to be valve related because i never had the right side valve cover off and its almost louder than the left side.
i'm soooooooo pissssed. :mad2:

You may want to take the whole intake off again. Pull battery, depressurize fuel, pull the intake and you can rotate the crank to get the valves to open. Maybe somewone has an idea of a tool that you can look down into the cylinder and grab it out with another tool??? That sucks!

What the Hell! As long as it did'nt make it into the combustion chamber you may be OK with just removing the intake and fishing it out. You can pull the entire upper and lower intake in one piece to make it a little easier.
I hope you get it figured out. PM me if you need anything. :burnout:

Oil pan can't be removed with the engine in. Chances are you dropped something on top of the valves through the intake port. Pull the intake off and start inspecting.

Well, remove the front bolts to take the timing cover off. Minor details! :D

there is a magnet on a stick/pointer. bend the pointer, also there is a tiny mirror on a stick/pointerso you can look in. I did that once but saw it happen. I pulled the plug and fished out the nut with the magnet on a stick.

Take the plug out and look with a borescope. It may be small enough to pick out with a magnet or mechanical fingers.

The question is, "will it blend?"
Better to do the borescope to make sure there is nothing causing interference, but from the sounds of it, it is too late. And yes, the heads can be removed while in the car. Unless you are skilled, take it somewhere you trust.

what i don't understand is how the noise is so loud. I know FOR SURE that i didn't drop any nuts, bolts or sockets because all my tools were put away and none were missing and i wasn't missing any fasteners when i finished reinstalling the intakes.
if dirt dropped in the head through the intake port i can't see why it wouldn't have just blown out the exhaust valve....if not maybe a slight tick noise but judging by the sound it made i'm thinking i've got a broken valve or two...which makes NO sense.
its driving me crazy just thinking about it....i'm not getting any sleep tonight!

I just went back and re-read your post. Was the valve cover off as well? Did you accidentally drop a tool/bolt/something on top of the head before you put the valve cover back on?
I would pull the drivers side valve cover off and see if something is floating around under it that would get knocked around by the cam followers.

yes i had the drivers side valve cover off and if i don't find anything when i pull the intakes i'll pull that back off to inspect BUT the knock noise is coming from BOTH the left and right side of the engine....i didn't have the passenger side valve cover off..

Sorry I cannot help further.
Only disassembly will find the source.

You have to get over being frustrated, get some rest and try again with a fresh head. It was'nt doing it before the cooling mod there has to be an explaination.

Take a flexible magnetic pickup (a good one, not one of the cheap-o ones at harbor freight that the head can come off of) and twiddle it around through the intake ports. If there's anything loose and metal in there, it will stick to it. Just because you didn't drop something doesn't mean there wasn't something else there to fall in.

Noise from both sides?.. maybe crank shaft pully lose or interference. some where..

Agreed. If he dropped something in the motor, it would not likey cause the noise on both sides.
