View Full Version : Rust removal

I have surface rust on my K5. It's SB silver, the exact color. I have a little surface rust and I was told I could wipe it away with water and some type of rubber towel.
Is this true or do I need a special cleaning product. Also what do I wipe with? I almost wanna use steal wool since it worked on my exhaust pipes, but I fear that's too much and will remove the paint and or take away some of the smoothness from the body.
Any suggestions?

A little surface rust? Well, silver is the toughest color to match so you will need to sand down the entire truck to bare metal and repaint the whole thing. I would take it to the body shop. Should cost a little over $8,000.00.

Sand the area and surrounding area out about 3 inches to bare metal. Apply 3 to 4 even thin coats of primer to the area, wet sanding until smooth between each coat. Spray the area with desired color, let dry, wet sand smooth (about 3 or 4 times). On the last coat, take a rag dampened with paint thinner and try to approximate the color by rubbing on the new paint. Wet sand, and apply 1 to 2 coats of clearcoat. The clear may actually darken the paint a tad, so keep that in mind when thinning. Wet sand the area, let dry for 2 to 4 weeks, and wash and wax as normal.

Keep in mind, any rust or contaminents will quickly cause the paint to fail, or rust to re-appear. Bare metal means just that, bare metal.

You kiddin' me? Everywhere they are popular.
It's more common to see one in someones backyard than a street, even in "Decent" parts of the country. I'm lucky enough to have one of the few left on the road. ;)

Dom-do yourself a favor and take it to a bodyshop and have them look at it. They can then tell you what you need to have done -their is nothing you can use to just wipe rust off. Trust me -you do not have the experience to handle this.

This definitely would have been used for evidence for the practical application of the lobotomy back in the 30s.

Dom-I told you the way - rust removal = Bodyshop! If that is not good enough pour a can of Coca Cola on it, wait till it fizzes then wipe clean. Coke is known to eat rust away:)

Never heard of a rubber towel. What may work is a decontamination kit available at Ford and LM dealerships. It is used to remove airborne contaminates such as rail dust that embeds in paint and causes rusting. These particles cannot be removed with a regular wash. Just follow the instructions on the kit and when completed wipe down with straight white vinegar to neutralize any remaining product. When dry you should also wipe down with an oil rag to prevent any new rusting as you now have a rust free surface that will quickly rust again without any protection. Then at your leisure you can prime and paint. So there you have it, your K5 dressed in oil and vinegar. Hope this helps.

See it's a real shame when someone can help and they choose not to. It just proves who's a decent person and who's an a-hole that wants to kick you when you're down.
Thank you again AJ.

That's alot more then just wiping the rust off and everything will be okay. I am now finished with this topic. Good Luck.

To be realistic, I think that we all know that Dom doesn't really want an answer...
he just wants more attention and interaction with other MM.Net members.
He even likes it when members are not nice to him or hijack his threads....it's all good, because it is still attention.
It reminds me of children who purposely do something wrong, knowing that it is wrong and knowing that it will get their parents mad at them.
It gets them in trouble, but it also gets them more attention.
