Too much freon, if they charged it twice.
But really, it could be anything, we need more info. Is the compressor running? Is it leaking? Did they vacum the system down, and if so, did it hold? If it held vacum, then why 2 recharges? if it held no vacum, why charge it, it has a leak.
We will be needing more info on what's going on.
Agreed, need more info. Oh, and the shop may not know what it's doing, if they diagnosed a new evaporator (typically the most expensive ac component to replace), and it didn't correct the problem.

first off what was it you told the shop to do? exactly. When I work on a/c and the customer says it don't work I first clean everything related to the a/c all line, compressor, fittings everything gets cleaned good first!!! then I verify that the A/C still is broke and not working( hey I had a guy come in and all I did was clean everything and it fixed the problem as he never cleaned behind the grill area which was totaly trashed with bugs dirt he never cleaned it so it could not condense and cool right) Second I draw a vacume for about 10 to 15 min, Then put in leak dye and a bit of new refrigerant, Run system for about 10 to 15 min get the UV light and special glasses also get the A/C leak sniffer out as well then I go over every line fitting everything and look for and sniff for leaks heck sometimes just changing an o ring or 2 is all they need. Once I find the leak I fix that then repeat above steps if I find no leak then it is something else IE electrical. Course they shoulda mad sure everthing actuall turns on spins cycles as it should first before all of the above is done. I try and do all my own work as I really dont trust shops any more (except alt auto) Good luck hope they can get it for ya. And also any time a change a part out like what they did I always change the orficce tube and the drier at the same time costs a little bit but it is good insurance also do not mix r 12 and 134 as cross contamination and or moisture will cause an acid to form in the system and destroy from the inside out/ (Cool fact if you burn r-12 refrigerant and catch the fumes you have a nerve gas!)

How did the shop come to the conclusion that you needed a new evaporator?
Have they hooked up manifold gauges? What are the hi & lo pressure readings?

Agreed!
It's obvious that the shop that just did the work don't know how to troubleshoot A/C system.

$600 is ALOT to pay. I just replaced the A/C compressor and accumulator for $200 parts only including Freon on my 96 Ranger. Go to a new shop - these people do not know what there doing.

^^^what they said^^^
If your shop replaced the evaporator and that's not the problem, then they just paid for yours. That's the price they pay for not knowing their job.

advice: get your money back, go to a dealer or reputable service center

I hate it when I read advertisements for used cars and they say something like, "AC Working but needs a recharge!" Most of you know, refridgerant never wears out -- so in the case of system needing a recharge, the leak needs to be fixed first!

When mine stopped working, it was just the relay. That's why I take my car to the dealer for things like this. It may be a little more money (Labor at $100/HR) but at least I know it will be fixed properly.
