View Full Version : Thunderstorm!

Last night as Marianne were eating dinner we got walloped by a thunderstorm/micro burst.
We've never seen such wicked winds from a thunderstorm.
The trees were literally doubled over!
Our deck umbrella, which sits anchored in the center of a big glasstop table almost lifted the entire table off our deck! (the umbrella was folded down)
The rain blew against the house at a 90 degree, horizontal blast. Then the pea sized hail hit!
We survived with only minor tree limb damage, along with an 8 hour power outage.
This morning I drove around the neighborhood and surveyed all the trees that were snapped off and pulled out of the ground.
One guy had a BIG tree fall across his driveway and crunched both his cars...:(

The storm passed quickly and as soon as the rain stopped I stepped out on the deck and looked up to see crystal clear blue sky!

There were lightning bolts coming out of the back edge of the storm clouds and they would arc out into the clear blue sky! Really wild to watch!

The colors of the storm clouds as they moved east across the Chesapeake Bay were awesome:

Here are a few shots of the thunderhead way off in the distance.
There were tons of lightning bolts inside the clouds and they would light up the clouds like huge cotton balls.
I tried to catch the bolts, but I only caught a few small ones.
I need a better camera and a good tripod!

Clear skies at my house all day yesterday, but could see the storm clouds to the east and south of us.

Glad to see you survived the storm w/minimal damage!

Welcome to climate change - we had similar weather last night but nowhere near as strong. Just had enough rain to float everyone's recyclables down hill to the front of my house. They only had to make one stop this morning to pick everything up!! LOL

Nice pics Joe. Sounds like some scary moments.

We had a similar line of thunderstorms pass through Virginia between 7:30-8:00 PM last night. Fortunately, we were on the northern fringe of one of those wicked "purple" cells that went through the Dale City area.

Lots of lightening and we could hear the strikes/thunder all over. Storms reported have .75-1.5 inch hail in multiple storms. Other than a quick 5 minute downpour and some moderate winds, we were spared by the big ones.

PS -- I bungee cord my patio umbrella to make it more difficult for the wind to open and carry away with the table.

I went storm chasing one night about 5 years ago. I purposely drove straight into the center of the storm in the middle of nowhere. It got so intense that the car was rocking really hard and I thought a tornadoe was going to suck me up into it. I was scared that I made a big mistake. I think twice about messing with storms now.

Unlucky neighbor about 1/4 mile from our house.
They just finished cutting the tree away from his cars.
I don't know the family, but I feel bad for what happened.

That storm was crazy yesterday. I was still at work and thought it was noise from plane lanes to BWI. Walked outside and was like whoa, all that pinkish orange and the way the clouds were rolling and rotating was a recipe for disaster.

My g/f's parents live over near Harmans Rd and Ridge Chapel (Hanover, 5 mins from the mall), from what my g/f told me a very small vortex did touch down and made a huge mess. G/f's parents back yard fence was destroyed completely, lots of big tree limps every where. Still some 20k people without power I believe.

Great pics Joe! I got hit by a lightening storm last night that was unlike anything I've seen before.

At midnite it was actually light outside with flashes of darkness...that's how bad the lightening was. It'll interesting to see how many cattle I lost last night. They like to stand under trees in bad weather.

We've been having stuff like that for about the last 10 days. Twice yesterday and twice today. 80+MPH winds, hail, tornadoes, etc. It's been real interesting around here. I watched a storm Monday night....constant lightning for over a n hour.....no breaks, just constant light. WOW.

With the hail storm we had 4 weeks ago in southern MD, we have $3K damage on the JETTA and $19K damage on the house. Still have to make plans to get our 31 ft camper into an RV dealer to get an estimate. Hard to do when I'm back in Omaha for 3 weeks taking a class at the University of Nebraska, Omaha (UNO) campus...be back the evening of the 9th.

Didn't claim my 12 year old SuperDuty, the would have totalled it. Now it just charactor.

We do have a date to put the JETTA to the body shop,.....April 2011. Yep, that's 2011.
