So my buddy showed up today and we proceeded to do oil changes in the back yard (he lives in an apartment with silly rules against such behavior). Anyway, he apparently doesn't take the little plastic ring off the bottle that holds the cap on. If you are using a wide bottomed funnel, I now know this ring will fit through the filler hole on a 5.4L F-250! Fortunately, we managed to fish it out fairly easy.

I NEVER leave those things on and I always make sure the rubber gasket from the old oil filter comes off the car as well. Two major rules for when I do an oil change

Ouch! I've seen a double gasket before! Car usually runs out of oil within two blocks after that!

I've had a quart dumb in about 2 seconds of running. I always turn my car on and off quickly after an oil change to check for leaks. Once no leaks are found I let her fly

A friend of mine dropped the whole plastic lid and ring into her engine. She says her shop guys told her it would be O.K. I fished it out before she started the car.

I cut an empty quart oil container in half and use that as a funnel.
I'll angle the cut depending upon the angle of the filler tube.
You can start emptying the oil from the full quart, and then just leave it there to fully empty in the old "funnel".

Doing this at my next oil change... Great idea cutting to the angle of the filler neck.
