Passed a truck, came out of it O.K. to a stop sign. Off the stop thru 1st and 2nd O.K., no 3rd, just winding out like I was in neutral. Clicked OD off, had 3rd. Clicked OD back on, no 3rd, just winding out like I was in neutral. Parked for 45 minutes, engine off. Left and had 3rd again (OD off). Running as normal now. :dunno:
Thoughts?
Sounds like time for fluid change, sir.

Thanks you for your input. Fluid is okey dokey. I was really looking for more than one response on a board about these cars. Hmmmm, Have I discovered a quirk no-one else has ever experienced? Maybe I should have posted this in the "Stump the professional" section :dunno:

Don't know what to tell you, I mooshed the pedal to the floor on the way home today to pass a car and it didn't kick down and launch, just picked up speed. I got around the car and a couple hunnerd feet later I did it again and it screamed open that time, so I yelled out "WHO'S THE *****, NOW?!?!" and scared the bejesus out of poor Amy. I hope this helps.

Your RPM's would increase some with the Amy mod. :D

Sounds like a heat exacerbated problem. It is probably one of those things that will only cause trouble when the car is hotter than normal. I would have said first step would be to change the fluid, like CBT said. Until then it is probably one of those "we can't diagnose what it is if it's not doing it right now" problems.

If it happens again, I would check for a loose connection in the harness leading to the transmission.

That's not the only thing that would increase!!!!
I wouldnt worry about it, honestly.
I came to a stoplight yesterday and the car just shut off for no reason. Started right up and away I went.

my car was overheating yesterday(monday)...im not saying why(to embarrasing) and i noticed when it is running hot, the car feels like the trannys about to take a crap on you......and i just did a complete fluid exchange on sunday... try checking antifreeze/radiatior/electric fan/pinched hoses.--whitey

I noticed that too. I guess it does a short shift to keep the RPMs down. I had air in the system and that's when the gauge went up and it shifted into 2nd too soon and bogged the engine down.

Thoughts? When My Marauder started to have the 3rd gear problem, I added the 4 oz of friction modifier to the trans fluid and problem went away. Approx 29,000 miles. But later, I decided to drop the trans pan. Approx 30.000 miles. The magnet in the pan was completely covered with goo! Cleaned the goo and changed the filter too. I would recommend you drop the pan and clean the goo off so the magnet will work right and the 4 quarts of new trans fluid will re-vitalize the trans fluid still remaining. If the problem then still exists, I would add the 4 oz of friction modifier.Jim
PS You can do a search as another post of mine has the photos of the magnet in the trans pan.

The magnet in the pan was completely covered with goo! For the benefit of those who may not be aware, having the magnet covered in "goo" is normal. That goo is actually ferrous wear metal from the clutch pack steels and other internals. Since the filter is more of a "rock strainer", the magnet catches the fine wear metals so they don't circulate throughout the transmission. Unless you have a huge buildup or can actually see pieces/slivers of metal, it's fine.

I updated in another thread but not here. Oopsie.
problem never repeated. She was due for tranny service anyway. Fluid looked normal.
Just glad my baby is running normal.

Friction modifier is for rear ends. I wouldn't use it in a tranny. Quality tranny fluid will have all the additives you need.
