View Full Version : Full SW exhaust after 3000 mi's

I purchased the full sw exhaust system. I thought at first it was priced a bit high. I am sure you read my post on the fitiment issues. It still does not fit 100%. I am also disappointed with the exhaust note itself. Not only that after about 1200 miles the car is throwing a cat efficiency code. GRRrrr. The system is so raspy. I am wondering if I go back to my stock tips if that would help. If not could it be the mufflers that make it have the terrible rasp above about 2100rpm? Please help. You think any modification would make you want to put your foot into it. This has done the exact opposite. Sounds terrible. Almost wish at this point i would have just purchased the headers and thrown a set of flowmasters on it.
Let me know your thoughts. Some of you may like the sound but I cannot stand it. I will have the tips and mufflers for sale if that fixes the problem...

If you have an X pipe they have a reputation for having a "Raspy" note. Some like it some don't, try an H pipe

I bought their full system off the website. So you think it would have nothing to do with the mufflers or the tips? Where could I get an H pipe? I would like to do get as much info as possible before i own an exhaust that has cost as much as my car.

You can't find one... With the system you now have it would have to be custom made. Try to find a shop that does mandrel bending with SS and go from there

Great. Now I will have an exhaust that costs as much as the car. Bummer.
Could I put the stock exhaust back on keeping the headers installed?

^^^ any capable shop will be able to do it, they just need a 3" pipe coming out the long tube then hook up the factory 1 7/8". all the way back.

BTW the raspiness is from the x pipe.

SW headers, cats, x-pipe connected to either stock mufflers and tips or Borla mufflers and stock tips.
I didn't see a post on what kind of mufflers you put on, but your best (least expensive) way out now it to put the stock mufflers and tips back on, then have them adapted to the SW x-pipe.

BTW, I have an x-pipe and my car isn't raspy. I suspect the mufflers and/or tips are major contributors to the raspy sound.
I have a X - pipe no raspiness here!

i do have an X pipe, but i run 18" magnaflows and no raspiness.
i have been in a MM with x pipe, flowmasters and 4"tips, it was mustang raspy around 2k rpm.

easist, cheapest thing that you can do now is replace the mufflers.
use dynomax super turbos 25" overall length, they have good flow and will probably eliminate the rasp. They are the quietest mufflers you can get. cost about $100 for 2...
second thing you can do is get a magnaflow muffled X pipe.
I have both of these mods. Many who have gotten the full SW system got it quieter by adding the Muffled magnaflow X pipe - then they were happy.
see my thead about it in exhaust forum.

Yep... I can't understand why somebody would put on non-baffled tips then wonder why it's loud...

easist, cheapest thing that you can do now is replace the mufflers. Or put the stockers back on if they're still usable (some shops hack up take-offs pretty bad).

For the money, they're probably the quietest. Borla XL is a little quieter, but over $300 for a pair. Borla is the only muffler I've ever heard of a member here installing and then taking back off, complaining that they were QUIETER than stockers.
second thing you can do is get a magnaflow muffled X pipe..Good idea, that along with stock tips and quieter mufflers ought to fix it up quite nicely.

Put it on the back burner... Cash flow problems. Planning to swap to the Borlas when I can. I bought a pair but they weren't the right size so I sent them back for a refund. Decided it could wait until I get a job, what I've got works but it's loud. I don't drive the car much these days anyway since it uses more fuel than anything else I've got (except the motor home).

Don't blame SW because you don't like there cat back exhaust system thier the best out there. You paided a load of coin for the best. Why would you spend all that money not knowing what to expect ? But know that you are in a pickle this is what you need to do. As for the raspyness that is from the mufflers. Just reinstall the oem muflers. If it is still to loud install a small mid muffler two in/out. As for the code on cats you must either hook up or install the secondary O2 sensors & o2 wire extendors. Or install Mil eliminators. They will statisfy the down stream o2 sensor imput.

This is exactly what i was thinking. I knew right off rip the tips would be an issue with me. I have the stock tips and will have them along with mufflers installed asap. Do you think installing flowmasters would be a bad idea?

I am not blaming them. However 3k for an exhaust, you are correct. I did expect the best. The fact that it did not fit was my problem at first. Bogus hangers, clamps that were too large, wrong o2 ext. , etc. Go back and read my first post on the whole deal. BTW their customer service is great. Product...ehh not too impressed.

Do you think installing flowmasters would be a bad idea? Dont feel to bad. As my complete stainless works system was a POS also.. Fittment was horrible. It's like to diffrent people made the headers and pipes. I love the headers if i had to do it over again thats all i would have bought from SW. Mine doesnt seem very raspy just very loud. 18 inch Magnaflows are in my future.

ok, i'm glad that I asked because my friend had a 2003 mach1 and installed bbk long tubes with some flowmasters and cat delete. I thought it sounded pretty good. But i guess this is a different animal. I have magnaflow with LT on my 99 Camaro ss. It sounds pretty damn good. :)

Aero Turbine AT2525 series muffler. Ask Doom about them.

If you like the magnaflow sound that may be your ticket. Borla & Aero Turbine 2525 are another great sound choice.

Buying full systems never seems to go well, you are in it deep already though. put some super turbos on it and it'll quiet it down quite a bit

Sure when you get on the throttle and want to make noise but light throttle and cruising speeds there is hardly any if any drone and just a smooth mellow sound.
Personally I think they sound better with an H-pipe than an X-pipe but with an X-pipe they are less louder at lower RPMS compared to w car with an H-pipe.
I would classify them as being a muffler between a Magnaflow (w/packing inside) and a SLP Loudmouth which is pretty much a shaped hollow tube.

did you dyno tune after install? When I had mine done and then the dyno tune said it was a bit lean. Mine fit great. Did you call them about the issue?

I have not called them about the issue. I dont think that they could/would do anything. I did contact them about the fitiment issues when I first purchased the system.
Also how would a dyno tune help the sound of the exhaust. TIA:confused:

It won't do anything for sound. It will however make sure your getting max HP from the LT's. Any exhaust mods require the air/fuel ratio to be adjusted with a dyno tune

I figured I needed to do that anyhow. I was just holding off because I have prob. 80% of everything needed to do my eaton swap :) Figured do it all at once. I'd rather not spend $ twice if I dont have to.

did u buy the full 3" exhaust...? Cuz thats the larger system I out on my 20+psi supercharger Marauder & I love it... Its not too loud until you get into it... but I almost never have to go over 1/3 gas pedal down...
I bet you'll like the exhaust much more once you have a supercharger pushing more air through thoses stainless pipes... fyi

It is the one that I have. I just cant deal with the sound of the rasp over 2100 rpm. Especially since the car does not really move out of its own way yet. That is the only thing I have done to the car. (Complete sw exhaust) Do you think that would go away with the sc? I'm leaning more towards, no.

Just change the mufflers man, that'll fix you up.

Res-delete tips and change the mufflers, the more free flowing it is the less rasp it will have.
Chambered mufflers like Flowmaster just juggle the sound and air flow around inside of them. Straight-thru mufflers will flow more hence create less noise compared to chambered mufflers.
Last year I put a set of 40 flowmasters on when it was basically stock and it sounded pretty good. This year I changed to Cobra manifolds, 1 set of cats opened up to fit a 2.5" h-pipe and an Eaton conversion. Now it has this nasty brap sound starting around 1/4 throttle so I threw on a set of Dynamax Super Turbos and allmost sounds like stock again. :)
