Before I explain exactly what the problem is, I have used the search function and was unable to find someone with the exact issue I am having.
When my car is at any rpm 1000 or under the steering is really heavy. This does not occur when the car is cold. Once the engine warms up the problem comes back.
If I am sitting in place or trying to park if I hold the brake and get the rpm's up above 1000 the steering works fine.
I took to it ford and they told me that they think it could be a sensor by the oil filter, a bad pump, or possibly I would need a new rack.
btw, my car has 80K on it.
Thanks in advance

Could be the sensor. I'd disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor and see if it's dirty. If it's dirty clean it.

Is the idle too low? One of my cars has a bad idle so when I load the engine like turn the a/c on it almost impossible to turn the wheel sitting still.

Sorry to hear my old car is giving you fits man! I only had issues with the steering when I was under heavy braking then a hard turn. I always figured the variable speed steering control module thing couldnt keep up. Other than that, My wife would tell me how she could steer my car with her index finger...
I hope you get it figured out without having to spend any $
I did have the Lidio Tune on it for the majority of the time I owned the car. Maybe the higher idle then back to stock idle messed it up...I am out of ideas.
Did ya get them F1's sold?

Try flushing/changing the fluid.

sounds like a PS pump on its way out. Windstars were known for this. very difficult to drysteer but if you gave the throttle a quick tap and turn the wheel it would steer fine because you'd spinning up the pump faster.
but i would first try what Krytin suggests. flush the fluid first, thats cheap insurance!

Thank you for the suggestions,
I have cleaned the connector on both ends with brake parts cleaner then wd40. I plan on flushing the fluid in a few days..
When I finally figure out what it is I will post back.

Yes, I did get the F1's sold.
The problem has been there since I got it and its not getting any worse so I am not in a huge hurry.
Btw I have put on Stainless works long tubes with high flow cats hooked up to the factory exhaust along with a handfull of other tasteful mods, I am addicted.

Just to follow up on my my problem. I replace the pump today with a refurbished one from the dealer and all the problems cleared up. no more fighting to make a turn!.
Next I am going to drain all the fluid out of the power steering system because the old stuff smelled burned and was much darker than the new ATF fluid I added.

Should have drained out all the fluid before installing the new pump so you don't contaminate the new pump.
