I took my marauder out on saturday & it suddenly has an issue with the steering binding when making a turn. It is tight, normal & tight again when making turns. I had a problem with one of my company vans, an 06 E350, a couple months back that was doing the same thing & it wound up needing a new steering shaft. I used the search function & saw a post talking about this same issue.
My power steering fluid is at the proper level & I do not hear any noises when turning the steering wheel, so I am thinking it is the steering shaft. Any opinions or ideas on this issue before I take it to the Ford dealer tomorrow?

Have you added headers latley? Are you sure it's not the steering control assist kicking in?

I can't see the steering shaft bending without cause. Any accidents? The SS is made of a material that will snap in a head on collision to keep the colum from comming into the driver's chest. Have someone turn the wheel while you look at it
Good Luck.

The car has not been in an accident. The steering was fine when I drove it a week ago, then on saturday it was binding. On the work truck they originally thought it was a problem with the ball joints & then it turned out to be the shaft.

someone also said its the rack, one of the speed sesnitve steering sensors? anyway i would try the steering shaft and let me know if it fixes it. there is a p/n for it somewhere on here if you search it

The Lower steering shaft universal in binding up from being without luibracation. Spray with WD40 to free the joint. The safe and proper repair is to replace the shaft as quickly as posibably to pervent locked steering before the joint brakes and fails .

yes its more than likely the rack and a sensor. same thing happened to me, tight steering (almost dead). dealer replaced my power steering pump, the rack and pinion and a switch that senses speed.

When I got home tonight I sprayed the upper & lower steering shaft connectors with WD40 & took it for a ride around the neighborhood. Problem solved!!

That WD-40 won't hold up for long. You should remove the shaft and soak in it a thicker synthetic oil. Good to know it was just a joint binding and not something serious.

I will get it fixed properly. I've been stressing out the last couple days thinking how much is it gonna cost to fix. I'm just happy that it wasn't something really expensive.
Thanks to everyone for your input!
