So I went to my local trusted tire shop today to talk about tires. We talked in length about the Hancook Vesta (295's) and the Nitto 420 (255). He then suggested that I consider a Nitto 555 in a 295/45/18.
Will that fit on a standard, non-widened rim?

One benefit of this tire is I cam get matching front and rear tires.

Thanks for the response!
I know folks are running 295's but all that responded earlier were suggesting the Hancooks. I am under the impressions that some MFG'ers 295's will fit are stock 8.5 rim, and some won't. Please correct if I am wrong.
I was quoted ~250 each, mounted for the Nitto 555's in a 295 size.
Thanks!

A 295 tire is a 295 tire. Why would one work on a stock rim and not another?? That's the nice thing about have a standard.
I ran Hankooks on the stock rim for 3 years with no problems, just switched the same tires to widened rims.

I run 295's on 91/2" rims and 255's up front. Never a problem. Most enjoyable to drive.

They do work on a stock rim...looks a little bit bowed, but it does work. I have widened rear wheels, but I have seen other cars with the 295's with factory width. I love the Nitto 555's I love their wet traction and dry is unmatched in my opinion...with similar tires(outside of slicks at the drags). I too love matching front and rear tread.

Most P295/45-18 tire Manufacturers recommend a minimum tire width of 9.5".
IIRC: Hankook was the only tire manufacturer that recommended a minimum tire width of 8.0" for a P295/45-18 tire.
You can fit any P295/45-18 tire on our Marauder 18 x 8" rims.
It's just a matter of how much bulge is in the sidewall and how much you can safely push them to the limit.
BTW: I have the Nitto NT555's on my Marauder.
Rear: P295/45-18s on widened 9.5" rims.
Front: P255/45-18 on stock 8" rims.

Honestly with the experience I've had with tires over the years. Stick with a 255 on an 8" wide wheel. Anything wider tends to wear like absolutle **** in the middle. Not to mention the "sway" is aweful when you get a huge buldge in the sidewall. Even 255/55/18's felt like the ass was on sand at the road track....
If you want wider tires that will wear and handle correctly you need wider wheels. If you ran 295's on an 8" and tried to road race your would feel like absolute dogshit.
I ran 285/50/18's on 8" on my last car and they didn't do to bad on the street and auto-x. But 60+ cornering speeds. HOLY hell, hope your life insurance is paid up.
Ford F'd us over... 9" all round would of been PERFECT.

Nitto makes a 265/50-18 that is a perfect diameter match for the OE in the 555 series.

Yeah, found that out and also they make a matching front set. So, the plan is to burn the rear tires almost completely down and then just order all 4 tires. The fronts are okay, so one of those will be going to my new rim and become my full size spare.
I will hopefully put them on no later than end of August. Have a small trip planned with two of my boys and we are taking te Marauder.

I have the Nitto 420's on the back of my DTR. Very meaty tire! I will be putting them on the front when the BFG's wear down a bit more. Mine are the 255/55R18 and fit nicely on the standard rim.

Let's cut through the BS on this tire issue. 295x45x18 Nitto do NOT fit the standard MM rim - period! If you use them it is NOT safe and is dangerous if you do any kind of aggressive driving. You MUST use a widened rim. Any other advice is just plain BS.

I already made that cut through the BS. I will happily stick with a 265 Nitto on the rear. Since we are having no rim right now, and I am just at the wear markers, I am enjoying the ... Smoke ... from the tires. Tires should go on next week, all four corners. I have another rim coming that is going to replace one of my front rims, so the fronts may wait a bit longer.
Thanks!
Anthony
