How can I tell if my oil pressure guage is real or fake. I purchased the car used and always assumed that according to MM.net the guage was not functional.

It just shows that you have pressure. Not how much.

If it stays in one spot no mater what then it is fake. If it's high when the motor is cold, then goes down when the motor is warmer. Also lower at idle, then goes up when you speed up/ cruise on the freeway, it is real.

Stock,It will give you the same reading all the time hot or cold, not good. :)

If it's not a real gauge, that must get pretty boring...;)

So... is it real or fake?

It's real in that is shows there's pressure. It's fake in that it doesn't truly tell you how much. It's the same in my 2008 E-150 Cargo van. The needle is always in the middle. If it goes to zero, shut down the motor.

^^Ummmmm. Not just your cargo van but all vehicles. The Mfg's don't want to deal with service issue's dealing with the oil guage fluctuating. It would be neverending....

That's why it's fake, because it is a "gauge" and shows a range from 0-100 or whatever the OEM one is, I can't remember, however it may as well be a light, on (60psi) for yes you have oil pressure, off (0psi) for your motor is dead.
A real gauge shows the actual psi, and in that way it can let you know when something is wrong if your pressure is out of the norm for the condition you are currently in, instead of only letting you know way too late. Sure sometimes it's too late either way, but a motor could be saved if you notice the oil pressure is acting funny.

I added a low (5psi) light & buzzer to mine.
Below 5psi and a red led & buzzer sound off.

I added a LED but no buzzer. And now I have a REAL oil pressure gauge, as in mechanical.

The IDIOT LIGHT would go off if there was no pressure........

True, but if it goes off the damage is already done.

there is no maybe about it, once you're driving and the psi gets to 0 it's game over. Better yet suppose you are cruising and it goes down to 10 before going poof? the fake gauge with still read that you have 60psi, even though you are going along at 10psi, also not good

there is a way to make it functional (real)
The IDIOT LIGHT would go off if there was no pressure........
I would not bet on that. My 2006 500 had all the fancy info one could ever want from the info center. The oil change shop put a double gasket on, and oil poured out fast. No lights, till the engine was locked up. Then it all lit up as the engine failed. Full synth oil did nothing for it in 15 min of driving... I thought I saw on TV a engine run with no oil.
Shop put in a new engine. Cams were the first thing that seemed to fail from no oil.

There are a million different scenarios for this. Hence "maybe, maybe not".
You gave a worst case scenario. Best case? You change the oil and start the engine without refilling. You notice the oil light is on and quickly shut down the motor. You swear as you fill the engine with oil and to your relief everything is ok. The engine will run a very short time before the film of oil is worn off. Idiot light = good.

Well, I can't help it if your idiot light failed. But they are supposed to go off as soon as the pressure gets too low. Like when an engine is 2, 3 or even more quarts down. I used to work in a gas station when I was a kid. It happened ALL the time. Oil light comes on. Check oil. Little or nothing shows up on stick. Put in 2, 3, 4 quarts. And the oil that came out of these cars was black as night. People don't maintain their cars. That's why they invented IDIOT LIGHTS!

The Marauder doesn't have an idiot light for the oil pressure. The gauge is the only indicator. Not one of Ford's better ideas.

Idiot lights are a good thing. A gauge that acts like an idiot light is not. Especially if it's not on the instrument cluster right in front of you. If my LED comes on I know it immediately because it is a real attention getter. If the gauge goes down and I happen to not be looking at it, who knows how long it will be before I notice it.
When I blew engine # 2, everybody asked if I lost oil pressure. I don't know, I was in the midst of a 100+ mph 1/4 mile pass and was concentration on driving, never even looked at the gauge until the engine died. When I pulled the engine apart I found that it spun the main bearings because the oil pump gear was shattered. If I had the idiot light then I may have been able to save that engine by shutting it down immediately.

I thought he was talking about the stock oil pressure gauge all this time  He really thinks there is a light that is gonna come on? That's not gonna work out well.

Some Fords have two idiot lights for oil. One is a level sensor mounted in the oil pan, the other is a pressure sensor. I liked that idea.

I must admit that I never noticed that the MM doesn't have an idiot light for low oil and or pressure. Not that I was wrong in my analysis......
Anyway, righto. No one would notice the guage going to zero while driving. The engine would go poof!
