Can someone please explain what spark blow out is?

What does it sound like & what symptoms would your car have?

Just curious after reading this other thread.

Reading that thread it sounds like if there is to much gap the increase in forced air is enough to interfere with the spark. By shortening the gap the spark has less distance to travel thus giving you more of what it is designed to do.....ignite the fuel. Just a guess though but admit it it sounds like a good explanation.:)

When my car was making around 12psi my plug gap was .32

Now that my car is making alot more power and pushing 16-17 pounds of boost im just wondering if the gap needs to be changed? :help:

Im running motorcraft SP-505 plugs.

This my understanding. The higher the air pressure, the more the voltage required to bridge the gap. Simply put, the more boost you generate, the narrower the plug gap you should use. A narrow gap will, at least in part, compensate for the higher air perssure (boost).

Doom under certain conditions the pressure created by you supercharger can blow the spark out before it has a chance to ignite the air/fuel charge the spark plug is in there firing away and maybe it ignites every other cylinder stoke maybe not,it sounds sort of like a flutter from the engine, there will be a definite drop in power as soon as you get out of boost the engine should run normal again.

And if you're not having a problem with spark blowout, the wider gap is better. Sometimes with boost in the 20's I hear of people closing down as far as .025, but usually in the low teens .030-.032 is ok.

Doom, spark blow out was one of my top concerns when upgrading the blower. I changed my stock coils to MSD and considers a Kenne bell boost-a-spark. Lots of conversation with Chris Vinning and others about this subject. My gap was .25 on a set of NGK's that were 2 steps colder then stock plugs.

Like Fordnut said the wider the better in a nut shell you want to widen the gap untill you get blow out then close it down .01-.02 wider the gap the more HP they say.

Kenny Bell Boost a spark, Weapon X, Granatelli Pro series coils, Plasma booster.
The above items will allow you to run more boost with the same or LARGER gap as they send more energy to the plug - stopping blowout.

bigger gap = bigger power.
